Newbiw Smallmouth Bait Question, Please
Hello:
Will be a newbie at bass fishing. But will be giving it a try this spring. Questions: a. Do Smallmouth like small baitfish such as smelt, etc. ? b. Or, do they prefer "bugs," ? If so, surface type or underwater nymphs, etc. ? The same questions for Largemouths, please. Much thanks, Bob |

They will eat anything they can catch and swallow. The same questions for Largemouths, please. Same answer, but factor a bigger mouth into the "anything they can catch" part of the equation. Newbiw Smallmouth Bait Question, Please
Smallies will eat most anything that'll fit in their mouth.
Crawdads/crayfish are a favorite. Any type of crayfish plastics work well, as do tubes. And nothing beats catching them on topwater! My favorite topwater lure is either the Rapala Skitter Pop, or Skitter Prop. Largemouth will also eat anything (fish, frogs, mice, little birds, lizards, dragonfly.....) For starters, get yourself some spinnerbaits, plastics worms and tubes, some topwater baits, jig n pig, a few jerkbaits, and maybe a Johnson Silver Minnow...and you're good to go! |
Newbiw Smallmouth Bait Question, Please
Bob, A Bass , is a Bass , is a Bass. Smallmouth, Largemouth, Spots & Stripers, will eat everything that the fish thinks will fit in its mouth. After a few years the little fish learn not to eat leaves & seeds & such. But I'm telling you a bass will eat anything it thinks it will get calories from, including , mayflies , ants, frogs , mice, ducklings, spoons, hair , plastic, wood ect.. If the morsel is unetable the bass simply spits it out. Some artificial lures are made to fool the fish, and do. Most are made to fool the fisherman. Keep your tackle box small , hook up with a pal go have some fun fishin'. Those that can, do. Those that can't, teach. Charlie "Robert11" wrote in message ... Hello: Will be a newbie at bass fishing.
