preparing deer hair

I did a search and came up empty. Can anyone out there tell me what to
do with a tail to make it ready for tying? I know, I could just go buy
one, but there's no fly shop close and I have access to a tail from the
last deer of the season sitting in the freezer. (did I cut off all the
"why bother?" questions) So, what do I need to do to the tail so that
I can use the hair (assuming I don't want to dye it)? And, if you
happen to know of some good instructions on how to dye it also, that
would be appreciated. But first, do I need to cure it or something?
Total newb.

would'nt it be easier and cheaper just to order what you need from some
place like cabelas, bass pro, or the other online shops?

Slice down the tail bone with a sharp knife or razor blade. Remove the
tailbone and rub Borax on the skin and let dry. When it's dry, it will be
ready to use. Very simple and easy.

For fur I cut mine off bone wearing vinyl gloves Scrape off the fat
..Put in a brown paper grocery bag. microwave. NO MORE THAN TEN SECONDS Wash
in a 5 gal bucket first with Dawn dish soap (Cuts grease) Then I put in
washing marching (on gentle) in a FINE mesh lingerie bag with a little dawn
wash then wash with woolite Dry with towel Stretch over a old window screen
sprinkle with a mixture of salt and borax let it cure
When cured throw in freezer for at least a week in a brown bag of course
Its a lot of work but road kill requires it
Works for me
Wash a load of rags after washing to pick up any stray hairs that may have
gotten out of bag
