You use a running line if you're using shooting heads. (The running line
is the line that's "shot.") If you're using ordinary flylines don't
worry about it. Tie the line directly to the backing.

between the backing and the fly line on a fly reel. What is a running
line? What material is it? What do I hunt for when shopping for it?

Another use for it is a popular rig for Steelhead, and other fishing where
you have enough weight to pull the line out on it's own. It's not tapered
same diameter through and through.
