Drop Shot
 

You know I was never sold on the drop shot. But my partner kicked butt on
that technique. So I started to fish it, and it's really like a ,go to,
presentation. When I started to fish it, I started catching fish. At Clear
Lake, it really worked for us. We didn't do well in the tournament, but with
the right color it was awesome. Just looking for feedback.

shot at least some of the time. It's a staple technique for me. I may
not throw a crankbait for a month, and I don't use a spinnerbait every

I have tried drop shoting a dozen times or so with out any real success.
also I don't have a rod set up specifically for DSing .I just try an rig up
a bass rod with whatever I have in the boat .The bait I use is usually a
senko or some sort of lizard . The common theme in all this is "no fish" If
you were rigging a rod for a first time beginner what would you recommend
..rod length and power- line size- sinker weight- type, size and brand of
baits you all prefer Thanks guys

One of my best days on the water last year was drop shotting. I had a broke
trolling motor, so I just positioned the boat on the upwind side of a little
back water lake and let the breeze push me across. I nailed fish after fish
after fish after fish that were suspended in and around grass beds on the
bottom. I lost count of how many fish I caught. I have even used a drop
shot in shallow water from the bank it will work on cruisers too, although I
still prefer a light weight t-rigged ribbon tail worm for shallow cruisers.

Ken, most use a spinning rod for drop shot. Since you are building your own
now I would use a 6'8-7'0 rod. Lite power fast action. Something that can
take 6-10lb. test.

I had never caught any DS fish myself...Until Rich Z gave me some
first hand lessons. Come to think of it, I owe a lot of what I know
(about catching bass) from that man...Flippin 'nut, fishin deep jigs,
etc.

As for equipment, I use a 6', fast action, light power spinning rod,
2500 size spinning reel w/ 6lb test line, Lunker City 3/8 oz drop shot
weight (heavier if it is windy and I am having trouble feeling bottom)
and I still have a thing for Gil's belly shad drop shot baits.

Long, light and soft. I prefer a slower action than most of the
commercial DS rods. Steve Huber built me what I consider the perfect DS
rod. & footer, TN style handle sou you can achieve proper balance
without adding weights to the butt. Lots of tiny guides. Just an
incredible tool.

But to get started, any light to UL spinning rod 6 feet or longer will
work. Spool up with no more than 6 lb fluoro and rig up. Fish the hook
within a foot of the sinker unless you're specifically targeted higher
riding fish you've spotted on the electronics.

I am absolutely convinced, BTW, that heavily salted (IE, sinking)
plastics are much LESS effective for drop shotting than plastics that
are almost neutrally buoyant.

Once you learn to do it right, you'll always feel like you're not
catching enough fish when you're doing something else.

Oops. I forgot to include that one little detail, didn't I?

4", flat tail (IE, non twister tail) ringworm in Motor Oil.

Actually the particular bait I like is rather large for a 4" worm. I've
got it in ha'f-a-dozen colors, but I rarely even put one on other than
the motor oil, but that one, I went through several hundred last season.
