I paddled up to what looked like a great hole, anchored and everything was going great! I saw a BIG fish swirl the surface. I'm thinking it was a 4+ lb trout or a big ol' Salmon. I had shiners... which yielded a couple yellow perch. I started throwing flies. The fish weren't jumping .. just swirling the surface, rising its back up out of the water. There were some smaller ones as well.. looked like a spotted dorsal.. probably trout. (browns I guess) The water I was in was moving pretty good off to one side.. but this bit was behind a small island.. I was sort of in a swirl. I tossed in a pheasant tail nymph.. right on to their rise.... a few times. I tried a stonefly nymph (even though seemed a little early in the season), A black ghost. a golden kaufman stone with bead head, I tried a red humpy, royal wulff, blue Dun (ext body dry), and an adams parachute. All on top of the swirls, or near them. These big ol fish were feeding... but I could figure out what. It was a bit breezy and chilly, I couldn't see any insect above water hatching. Any ideas on what pattern i might try this time of year for this situation? I REALLY want one of those monsters down there. -- flies from $5.60 per DOZEN! I threw so many flies in the water it seems ONE of those fish should have made a mistake! I took a fine net down today and found wee bitty mayfly nymphs I think and some little grey/whitish nymphs clinging to the rocks. i had some little sz 16 hooks and poppeed on a plastic bead head with white thread.. A reasonable match actually. and did a similar with the mayfly nymphs. still nothing. One guy nearby me here said he got some of them on worms....... I tried that .... but not to the same success... wondering if he did something different or was just full of it. -- flies from $5.60 per DOZEN! Rods/Reels and Gear www.fly-fishing-flies.com |
