A Day with Mel Krieger
On Saturday May 13, Master fly-casting instructor Mel Krieger gave a free 5
hour casting class at the Golden Gate Angling & Casting Club. About 100 inspired casters along with 10 certified instructors of the GGACC were present. It was a beautiful outing as Mel had something for everybody. Out of all the master's I've seen, Mr. Krieger has the smoothest, prettiest presentation and he makes it look effortless. On the down side, after the roll cast session, I broke the tip (about 6") of my Sage Launch rod, when the gal next to me tilted her rod in my path as we were lined up going through the casting motion. This was just after many of the instructors have commented on how sweet the Sage Launch performed and the good value of the rod. No big deal, as accidents happen, and Sage has a lifetime guarantee. When Mel came by, he taught me "his cast". It takes a slightly different hand position as he tilted the rod about a 1/4" in my hand and had me stop just before 1:00. At the end of the casting stroke, there's an ever-so-slight flick of the wrist, almost unnoticeable which shoots the line out with no waviness and a soft presentation. It's pretty awesome to watch the line just roll out into a tight loop and gently touchdown, even with a broken tip. The next day, I took my spare rod and had the cast down pretty good, Mel is a great instructor. Most of the other instructors didn't have much to correct me on, just positive comments, and about half of them personally wanted me to join the club. That's something I have to think about, I know I'll fit in, just worried about if I can commit due to my schedule. Although about 1/4 the people left after the lunch break, it turned to be a wonderful day with a Master Instructor. http://home.comcast.net/~tomnak/Mels_Day_006.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~tomnak/Mels_Day_009.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~tomnak/Mel_Krieger_2B.JPG -tom |

Sounds like a great time, Tom. I guess there may be some advantage to living in the big city after all, as I am guessing that Mel probably won't be coming to Lynchburg, VA anytime soon. Jim Ray |
