Sunday morning excursion

Had the chance to get out yesterday morning while visiting my wife's
family. They own some land on a small central Mn lake, shallow (max
depth about 20' - more or less bowl shaped). Predomiant species are
LM, NP, crappie and bluegill - and yeah - carp - lots of them.

Hit the water about 5.20 - just me, the boat and the fish. No sonar -
no propulsion other than oars. Water was glassy - no wind to speak
about, some sunlight peaking thru a mostly cloudy sky. Lots of
mosquitos in the air.

Eased the boat out past the edge of the lillie pads and reeds, fired
in some casts w/ a yellow/black Jitterbug. On the 3rd I heard a
soft "slurp" and the Jitterbug disappeared. Set the hook and felt
weight on my light spinning rod - fish on. Came out the water twice,
then stayed down. Got it to the boat and in - 14". Pics and released.

The boat had drifted - fired a cast off a point formed by the lillies
- heard another "slurp", got a 12". I was off...

Ended the morning at 9.00, with 5 LM landed - largest at 17", lost
2 more in the water in the 14"+ range - saw them both - one came
unbuttoned short of the boat - the other wrapped me around the
lillie pads.

Had a hit that I would of swarn was another bass - was a NP in the
mid 20" range - it also wrapped me in the weeds and got away.

Had a number of hits where the fish just plained missed.

Caught 1 12" on a Storm Thunderstick (blue chrome) after I broke
off the Jitterbug on a lilly stem (recovered it), and 1/8 oz
yellow/black spinner bait on a fire back cast after loosing one of
the larger bass - hit nearly in the same spot, but was the smaller
fish.

Wind came up as the morning progressed - great for making the
mosquitos go away - but the the oars got more use. I never
was further than about 300' either side of the spot the inlaws
keep their boat.

***No locator, no outboard, no trolling motor???? I didn't think you could
fish like that!!! :-)

***If this happens again (and it will), it can pay big dividends to have
another rod rigged and ready to go with a lure like a fluke or senko. Crank
in and fire the soft plastic right back into the area and quite often you'll
get that fish.
