Headed west to work in Fresno for a few days.
Will try to get on San Joaquin, where's best
access spots for some trout this time of year.

Thanks,

Jerry

Jerry,
I've never fished this area, been up on the Mammoth lakes, but I've heard
the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin
is pretty good. Here's a link:

Though the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin is a beautiful river, access to it
will be pretty challenging for a few more weeks.

I just returned from a few days in the Eastern Sierras, including the
Mammoth Lakes area. The road to Lake Mary and the other upper lakes in
Mammoth is still closed, but will probably open this weekend.

The road over the summit and down to the San Joaquin and Devil's Postpile is
scheduled to open, tentatively, for the first week of July.

The snowpack in the Sierras is the largest I can recall. The roads to
several of our favorite trailheads were still closed. They are usually open
by late May. Tioga Pass is not scheduled to be open until the first week of
July, maybe longer. All the trailheads above 10,000 feet are still
inaccessible by vehicles.

If you're headed up to the Sierras soon, take note of the wind conditions.
The wind definitely made fishing (and hiking!) a much more challenging
proposition. Be prepared to hike on deep snow drifts to get to some of the
lakes. I'm not recommending that you don't go. It's an absolutely beautiful
time to be in the Sierras. Just take a little more time in preparation and
enjoy the late snowpack.

As Danl stated, everything is iffy right now. Top to bottom, the SJ is
running high. If you're planning on fishing in the Fresno area, access
is limited to a few roads below the dam, or some insider knowledge
through private access. The Lower San Joaquin is planted weekly, but
it's running up into the weeds and trees right now. You might call Herb
Bauer's for some better options. Ask for the fly fishing dept.

Try googling up infromation on the Kings river. There is a section
below Pine Flat Dam that is fly fishing only. It's easy to get to from
Fresno. I haven't fished in in many moons but I used to do pretty good
there. It catch and release and about a 25 minute from Fresno. You can
fish in 100 degee weather while standing ice water.
The San Joaquine is hard to get to above Millerton lake.

The Lower Kings is close to overflowing it's banks. I took a look at the
top end of the ffing only section, and it's about as blown out as it can
be. Not saying fish can't be caught, but survival is one factor to
consider. I saw a helicopter hovering just down stream. I've seen this
enough to think someone went swimming, and is missing.
