Berkley Iron Silk
 

What is this line exactly? It doesn't look like mono, but its definitely
not a braid or is it?

I got a spool of 14 lb in a pack for joining something, and I finally gave
it a try today. It casts very well, has little memory, and seems to be
pretty tough except that it broke at the knot and cost me a fish and one of
those expensive Secret Weapon spinner baits. I tied on another spinner bait
and cast it for another hour. Didn't get any bites, but I did snag it up
several times, and it seemded to be plenty strong enough.

Anybody use the stuff? Got any opinions on it?

I've tried a lot of different lines over the years. I've found that if it
isn't PowerPro, I don't fish it.

Call me hide-bound, call me set in my ways, but I keep trying other lines
and find that I have line twist issues, sensitivity issues, excessive
stretch and other problems. I keep going back to PowerPro.

I stopped using it after loosing several good fish over a couple weeks span.
But it does cast well. While using "iron silk" I hooked the largest bass of
my life and as I worked the big old fish to the boat the line just separated
and my trophy fish was gone and so was the iron silk. But it does cast well

Never used it, but have seen more negative comments about it on various
forums than any other line, which is why I never tried it.

I enjoyed using the Iron Silk. I found just as mentioned here that when
there is significant pressure put on it, it breaks. Additionally the
knots do not bind well. Not sure why, but it does cast excellently.
Personally I think that it is better than Sensation, I have had very
poor luck with Sensation.

Steve - Since you mentioned the raving endorsement of Power Pro... Do
you ever have troubles with smaller diameter Power Pro (Like 20lb)
pulling through the fold of worm hooks (@ the eye)? I have lost more
fish than I care to remember because of the line pulling through the
fold in the hook. I pull my line out and I have a beautiful Palomar
knot with no hook or sinker.

Can't answer for Steve, but I too use PP for all but one spinning
reel. I use 10# to 50# and have never had the line do as you suggest
yours has. Maybe the hook eye is breaking or bending to allow the
line to slide off? What type of hooks are you using? I use Gammies
from 1/0 to 5/0 mostly EWG offset hooks.

Yes, I do on occasion have that problem. I've found that if I periodically
check and make sure that the knot is at the front of the hook eye, all is
well.

Thanks to you both (Steve and Dan) for the reply. I use almost
exclusively 5/0 EWG Gamakatsu's (maybe the smaller hooks have less
space between the eye, maybe I should try 3/0 or 2/0). The suggestion
to check the knot is probably the answer. I fished yesterday and lost
no hooks. Not sure what the difference was, but maybe I'll just begin
checking the knot more frequently. I appreciate the help, and definetly
let you know the results.
