front or rear drag

I'm going to pick up another Shimano spinning reel next week for a med.
light action rod. The local shop I go to have both front and rear drag
models, the rear drag has a lever for quick adjustment. What's the group
opinion between front and rear drag.

Thanks, Mike S.

Take a look at the reel diagrams, Mike, and compare the size of the drag
plates between the two options. In general, front-drag spinning reels have
larger drag plates, which translates into smoother functioning and fewer
break-offs.

Once you get accustomed to a front-drag adjustment, you will do it easily
enough. Set the drag farily tight for better hook-setting power and to
enable you to extract a fish from cover, but don't rely on the drag too much
during the fight in open water. That's where back-reeling comes in. Keep
your spinning reel set so that you can back-reel when the fish surges or you
need to give it some line to maneuver. This gives you much better control of
the fish and may reduce line twist.

Front drag, is the best. Larger plates=better drag operation,
smoother and less chance of failure when in use.

Go with the front drag . If you ever need a new spool, you will get a
complete new drag in most cases.

Thanks for the info, the local shop said they can't get the Spirex in a
front drag so guess I'll be ordering it from Bass Pro.

I have 2 spinning reels that I use almost daily, one front drag and one
rear. The rear drag is constantly being messed up/with, the drag being
moved one way or another during transport/handling of the gear. Maybe
just that particular reel, but I have to re-adjust it all the time
while the front drag reel is always set to where I had it to begin with.
