"Pro" / Kid Fishing Tournament
 

This is a serious topic. One of the reasons Yuma Pro Am has an age limit is
because of the fear of putting a child alone in a boat with a stranger.

I have heard a couple different people talk about trying a "pro"/child
fishing tournament, but I have rarely heard of how anybody addresses the
issue that strikes fear in my heart.

Perhaps its not a big issue in a big open lake, but on our river system with
all the backwaters and hidden channels it certainly could be.

I would support and even help organize a pro/child fishing tournament if my
fears on this issue could be laid to rest.

What would you do?

If you really want to get into that ball of worms, the
Kid's parent/guardian rides along as an observer.

But as wacko as some parents are these days, I'd avoid the issue altogether.

If you're intent on doing this (and it sounds like may be just throwing this
out for the sake of discussion), I advise you follow the Boy Scouts
guideline that has been forged from many years of experience and has stood
the test of time:

Leaders practice 2-deep leadership procedures. Two leaders must be present
with a youth at anytime. No non-parent adult may be alone with a youth
(Scout, camper, or sibling) at any time.

To follow this rule you would need to restrict participation in the event to
boats rated for four people, but I think you could probably send out two
youths with two adults per boat, with the adults acting as coach/mentors to
assist the youth in their fishing.

Its for conversation, but also because a mutual friend of ours brought it up
a while back. I brought up child safety as an issue and he dropped it, but
I would like to see something happen in that arena. Maybe if I could reduce
the risk or suggest some ideas he might take up the idea again.
