TR- Wisconsin Season Ends
 

The Wisconsin inland trout season ends for almost all streams and most
stillwaters on September 30th. The generally bemused look on Mason's
face in this picture probably sums up the last day of the season for
me.

We drove over to the "Mayfly" River. I had had to do some coaxing to
get Mason to come with. Luckily he caught a fish almost immediately, a
small brown. But the fishing was slow for that particular stream. He
took another fish, a brookie, on a dragged Madame X and had a few more
hits before it got too boring for him. I eventually landed a small
brook trout on a dragged EHC. We admired it and let it go and my
inland season ended.

We the drove the back roads back to Merrill, leaf peeping and stopping
at various lesser known trout streamlets to see if any fish were
feeding on top (we had a rod strung up with a Fuzzball and ready to
go). Nada. Mason fell asleep. I cruised on. It was hard to let the
season go. Its been a stressful year and fishing has been an
invaluable source of solace for me. I've thought about going over to
the Lupus for the extended season. But the forays I've made in the
past, in a vain effort to extend the year, have rarely worked well for
me. Better to let it go, I suppose.

It has been a great year for me, fishingwise. I'd bet my stream days
came close to 50 and I caught more big browns this year, thanks to the
Montana trip, than I ever have. But, Jeez, I wish I could go out this
afternoon and drift some flies over some rising fish.

Your season was pretty good for the rest of us too, thanks to the series
of wonderful TRs. Maybe you can coax one or two more up from memory
while sitting by the fire.... ? ;)

George,
I hereby extend and invitation to you to come out to Nebraska. We
don't have any seasons on trout. We don't have any trout either, but
if we did, you wouldn't have to worry about a season.
