Recommendations for 6wt fly rod under $200
 

Had a great trip with my son and my brother to Yellowstone! However...
I lost the tip of my 30-yo fiberglass pack rod hiking to Grebe Lake
so...

I would like to replace it with a 4-pc 6wt but I can't spend much more
than about $200 dollars. I have been told something about a Temple
professional and a Scott but I don't really know those names and I
can't afford Loomis or Sage that I know of so any and all help is
appreciated.

Michael,
before you buy, cast the Sage Launch rod first. It's priced at $200.oo.

I broke the tip of my 5wt Launch when a gal crossed paths in front of my
casting stroke, Sage replaced it in a week.
About the rod: I can put out 90 ft. to the backing, and tight loops at
60-70 ft .I also tested it in Alaska this past July on 5+ lb rainbows. Great
presentation of the dry fly. However if you're more of a nymph fisherman,
then a stiffer rod might be in order.

If you had a fiberglass rod, be careful about the stiffness of the new
graphite rods. Look at the Orvis catalog (online if you don't have a
store). They rate each rod with a stiffness rating, so you can find one
that suits you.

Regarding that, a stiffer overall rod might be fine but a softer tip is
better IMO.

I fish a 6wt. St. Croix. Premier 906.2 and love it. Check out thier Reign
series of rods, a step up from the premier series but still under $200.
These rods can take some abuse! I also fish an Orvis Clearwater rod. I buy
decent lower end equip. 'cause I have a tendency to do stupid things and
break 'em, and my wife will not allow me to pay more than $200 for a rod.
(if only she knew). I tend to like the fuller flex of the St. Croix on the
bigger rivers that I fish here in W. MI. The mid flex Orvis is probably
better suited for smaller waters. Anyway, I have been very happy with both.

Walmart has some good cheap flyrods. look on the bottom half and some
will say #6. dont matter what color it is as all colour rods will catch
fish. You could always spraypaint it if you dont like it.

but here goes. I bought a Scientific Anglers rod from them a few years ago,
before I quit going there. I am a very novice fly caster and I can tell you
those low end rods from Walmart are the worst rod of any kind I have ever
used. There are plenty of economy rods out there that would be better worth
your money. Again, St. Croix has some nice casting rods and combos in the
price range Michael is looking for. Orvis too.

I also agree that there are many better economy rods available.

LLBean would also be a good place to search.
Some of their rods were or are made by Thomas & Thomas and are decent and
relatively inexpensive.

If you're used to fibreglass, a Temple Forks Pro Series might be a rod
to try. Its not a fast action rod compared to some of the other
suggested rods. If it feels too slow, then maybe a Temple Forks Teeny
or TiCr might be a little better. All are 4-piece rods.

Another possible alternative might be the CV2 rods offered by Bass Pro.
There's a 3-piece 5 wt CV2 that might do the trick.

All the above are under $200.
