Anyone Fly Fishing American River at Nimbus Dam?

I was in Sacto area yesterday and went to just below the Nimbus Dam at Hazel
Street exit on Hywy 50. I only had a spin rod with red yarn 36" beyond a 1
oz weight (to get it down) and caught a 30 lb King Salmon. I had a about a
10 Steelhead on, but it got away.

I'm wondering what weight would be good for doing this with a fly fishing
rod? 8-9wt? The line would need to sink fast. Is anyone fishing this now?
Bob B.

I was well advised to bring nine weights in a similar situation, and I'm
definitely glad I complied. I got dragged around by salmon and steelhead
plenty well enough as it was, so I certainly wouldn't go any lighter.
