I have a couple of Lowrance Globemap 100 GPSs but never got software
or cable to download the waypoints to my computer. One of the hand
held GPSs is almost at its limit. Anyone here have the software and
cable they would like to sell, or know where I can get it? Cabellas
and Bass Pro Shop say it is obsolete and don't carry it anymore.

I also have a Lowarance LMS 320 on my boat that will take a chip -
would like to be able to download and upload from there, too.

Ronnie,

If you have the manuals, there should be a pinout diagram for making a
cable, otherwise, check on Lowrance's site, I believe that you can download
the diagram there as well. Any electronics shop should be able to make the
cable from that diagram for a reasonable price.

As far as software, Jerry had Lowrance units and might be able to help you
out.

Thanks - may try that. I am bidding on the stuff on Ebay right now but
it includes the GPS - already have two, don't really need another.

I think Jerry sent me some software several years ago but I can not
find it. The cable was the problem - I may take the unit to Radio
Shack and see what they can come up with. I guess any USB cable with a
serial cable end to match the unit would work.

Don't know about the Lowrance, but all my Garmins use an RS232 adaptor NOT a
USB.

Yes, I realize you have Lowrance. My reason for mentioning it was that you
really should check the manual, not just assume its all USB.

From the manual for your 100s:
** To use one of these, install the software from the CD-ROM onto your PC
compatible computer according to the insturctions supplied with the CD.
Next, connect an adapter cable from a serial port on the computer to the GPS
receiver. Now turn the unit on and adjust the communication port baud rate
to its highest level (Press MENU - SYSTEM SETUP - COM PORT SETUP). Set the
parity to "none" and the data bits to "8". **

This is the type of setup one does on a RS232 serial port not a USB port.
This could be a good thing since a serial port connection is easy enough to
setup by any computer hardware savy type. I suppose one could argue that
there are USB to RS232 adaptors available, particularly for modern laptop
computers that do not typically come with an RS232 type serial adaptor
anymore, but that would be stretching it.

I did not see a sample wiring diagram for making your own cable in the
manual however. There is a wiring diagram for attaching it to another NEMA
device. Perhaps one could deduce how to build their own serial cable from
that, but I would just be guessing.

Anyway, I just wanted to point out that you should not just assume that you
are dealing with USB particularly with older (developementally not
necessarily chronologically) communications devices. RS232 serial ports
have been around a lot longer and people tend not to integrate new tech when
the old tech works just fine and the new tech won't increase profits in
anyway.

P.S. Here is the link to the manual for the 100s.

I bought a USB to RS232 Serial port adapter at Fry's for about $8 that works
fine on my Garmin.

I've got a couple USB to serial adaptors I use for programming alarm panels
and telephone KSUs. Its a bandaid for the new laptops that don't have
regular serial ports.

W/ regard to software - take a look at Ozi-Explorer - it handles most
GPS units and the price is right.

I've got a Garmin Extrex - (can't help you w/ the cable), but
Ozi-Explorer handles it very nicely w/ a USB to serial interface
cable.

I just looked at the version I have (3.90.3a - have had it for a
couple years) - your Globemap 100 is one of the
suppport units. It also has a setting for "Older Lowrance" and "Other
Lowrance".

Merry Christmas!
