what do i need a-z
 

I have a 14 foot john boat and I am interested in a trolling motor
for it.what supplies and extra equipment do i need to do this
correctly? I know i need a battery(will any one do) will any of the
wiring come with the motor ? because of the way the motor is deployed
and retracted a foot control is probally out of the question? any info
anyone can give me plus ideas suggestions wouid make this a little less
stressful.thanks

Well, I don't know exactly how your john boat is layed out, but I know with
a little work some of your concerns can be dealt with.

Here are some thoughts. I have seen a TM mount for the front of jons that
will slip into one of the front handles (if your boat has them) for a hand
controlled motor.

A front motor is nicer for fishing and if you stay with a hand control and
put it up front you can usually reverse either the motor or the head so it
orients properly up there.

A hot foot switch is nice for a hand controlled motor.

Don't sell short totally the idea of having a foot controlled TM. A buddy
of mine has a 14' jon. It was basically a bare shell with bench seats when
he bought it.

Now it has a front casting deck made out of plywood. a tall fishing
pedestal, and a foot controlled trolling motor mounted on a platform
attached to his front casting deck. He also runs 2 batteries with a 24 volt
TM.

His boat is a little narrow in my opinion for standup fishing, but he does
it all day long out of it.

I have a jon boat rigged as a bass boat also. Mine is a little wider and
more stable and is a little longer. With a steering consoles its also rated
for more horsepower on the back. I ordered mine with making it into a
basser in mind. No middle or front bench, but a flat sole (floor) plate
from the rear bench all the way to a small elevated platform in front. I
was easily able to add a front fishing seat and I ordered mine with a
mounting platform for a front trolling motor installed.

After beating on this boat hard for four years I took it over to a local
welding shop. We welded the console in place. Put heavy reenforcing plates
on the front corners, removed the cheesy TM platform and welded in a box
made of 1/4" aluminum plate that reenforces one corner and makes for a dandy
foot controlled trolling motor platform and places the TM near the center of
the boat when deployed. Labor and materials for everything was only about
$280 for the welding and metal work.

If the TM is going to be your only means of propulsion go way bigger than
would otherwise be needed on a 14' jon. My buddy uses a 65lb Minn Kota on
his. It was his sole means of propulsion for 2 or 3 years. Last year he
scored a little Nissan outboard and now he runs all kinds of places. I use
an 82lb Motor Guide Tour on mine. I'm sure some folks will pipe up and say
that's way too much TM for a 16' jon boat, and it probably is for most
applications. For me its great. I have to be careful though. If I hit it
on full with it turned to one side it will practically throw you out of the
boat. On the flip side I have fished some lakes from one end to the other
without firing the big motor until it was time to head back to the ramp.

The Olive Drab Floater shown on the SWL page is an excellent job of making a
jon into a serious basser.

Really don't self limit yourself. Consider all the ideas you would like
before dismissing any of them. Then figure out how to do them.

I can visualize how things will work and fit together pretty easily and
often tackle projects with nothing more than the image in my minds eye (and
I screw up sometimes) but an image will help a lot. I had to draw pictures
for the guy at the welding shop in my own recent modifications. Do a rough
sketch of your boat from the side and from the top. Maybe do a couple of
them. Then mark it up with all modifications you would like. Then take the
image out and mentally transpose it to the boat. Then get in the boat and
stand there thinking about how things will work and mock going through the
mtoions while in your boat.

I bet you wind up with a really cool ride.

P.S. A stereo is nice, but a really resounding bass box will scare the
fish. :^)

I don't see how people can listen to music and fish, the older I get and the
more I fish, I realize that fishing has very little to do with catching
fish, and that's something my kids taught me without knowing it.
