Warm weather here in the North.

This has been a winter season of exceptionally mild weather in Michigan and
throughout the northern tier. Some say it is a result of El Nino and
anomalies in the North Atlantic Oscillation - others say global warming.
Who knows? Whatever the cause, the effect up here has been a mild season so
far with a good amount of rain to sustain the lake levels.

Bass season in Michigan starts on May 26 this year. Our late start is
intended to protect the spawn according to DNR.

If this warm weather maintains, what effect will this have on bass fishing
patterns? Will a continued mild winter season and an early spring hasten
the spawn and will we encounter mid-summer fishing patterns once we are
allowed to fish for bass?

Amazing, the forcasted high here in SE PA tomorrow is 73 degrees. My spring
bulbs are ready to bloom. And I haven't stopped fishing yet...

I'm envious. They pulled all of the docks out of the boat launch areas
here, and my favorite State Park lake is closed for the winter season.

The spawn may be a litlle earlier but bass depend on hours of daylight
combined with water temperature to tell them when to spawn. Length of
day is important.

Check with the folks in Denver about the "global" in global warming.

There are certain lakes which are open early for catch and release. Kent
Lake (big for an inland lake in this area at 1,000 acres) is C&R starting
April 1. As far as I am aware, we will be "fishing for walleyes" until May
26.

I talked to a guy behind the counter at Gander Mtn. last week who told me a
good fish story. He was out last May somewhere in this area fishing with an
ultralight rig. Hooked up a bass and took 15 minutes to boat it. Turned
out to be 12 lbs LM - which is huge for this area. Unfortunately it was one
day before the season opened. To add insult to injury, he was out on the
water without a camera.
