Maybe we just like the 540 8# hook because it is, I think, the middle size. However I like it. |

However I like it. _______________________________________________ The closest thing I have to a favorite hook for wet flies is the Mustad 3906B because they are relatively cheap. There is no one style of hook that is best for all types of wet flies. The hook style is dictated by such things as how fast you want the fly to sink (heavy vs. light wire construction), proportions of the fly being tied (long shank vs. short shank), style of body being tied ( dictates type of hook gape that will be best), etc. If you are talking about trout flies, a size 8 hook is certainly not a middle size. Wet flies are meant to imitate aquatic insects or small alevin. While a size 8 hook would imitate an extremely large insect or an alevin, the insects that are imitated by wet flies are usually in the size 10-18 range. BTW Tom's response is in reference to the fact that 8# in standard US writing style generally means 8 pounds in weight rather than size 8. Bob Weinberger La Grande, OR |
