Spring has sprung
 

At least in my area Spring is here.

During most of my working years Feb and March were two of my busiest times,
70++ hour weeks, and I hardly had time to notice as the trees sprouted
buds, then flowers, bees showed up and buzzed about those flowers and weeds
grew at a pace that seems to define "weed." I simply left instructions
with the help on what to spray, mow, and cut as I traveled the west running
field trial mutts.


Now I'm getting to spend hours myself with the tank sprayer and Roundup and
other, more pleasant, hours sitting on the deck in the warm sun and watching
the various birds show up and check out the nooks and crannies in the
cottonwoods. They never end up picking our trees but each year a pair of
Wood Ducks gives them a thorough inspection. I saw them today apparently
just starting to pair up and fly together, not house hunting yet, but
....soon.


I know many of you are still gripped in Winter, but look West or South ...
Spring is on it's way .... honest !

Today is the first day in a while that winter has lost it's grip.
After a brutal month of well below normal temps, all the white stuff
on the ground will finally begin to melt today as the forecasts highs
will flirt with 50. That 3" that fell a few weeks ago has hardened
into an irregular, lumpy skating rink in the driveway & back yard.
It's been so cold at night that the old furnace can't keep up, and
I've been waking to a brisk 59 degrees in the kitchen until I get the
wood stove fired up to help out.

With the latest turn of the weather, it's looking as though we won't
dip below freezing for at least a week, and Old Man Winter's back is
probably broken for this year. Time to tune up the bike. :-)

This is one of my favorite times of the year. The XC skiing is
excellent, the hockey rink is in good shape, and the only people in town
are those who actually live here, aside from the occasional asshole
snowmobilers on the weekends.

I'm dreading it. Spring here comes in late April and May. It's what we
call "mud season," and nearly all trout fishing in Idaho is closed in
May. I'm considering some alternatives.

As things stand now I'm planning to leave here about mid-May and fish the
lower HFork and/or in the Dillon or Craig, MT. areas for a couple weeks
before moving to YNP for June. I hear widely varied comments on fishing
in that time frame from "mud season" to "best time of the year." I'll be
looking for tailwaters to minimize runoff problems and I travel with an
extra kickboat if ya get a hankering to leave Stanley for a few days.


OH, how did you do in Mexico, or Argentina or wherever it was? Did you
file a report I missed ( I'm getting very near to being an ex-roffreader so
I may have just not seen it )

Indian Joe offers--spring not here yet in coastal N.C.--still have to wear
a shirt to play tennis and kayak is still hung in garage.
Currently feeding lots of yellow rumped warblers--and a couple of piliated
woodpeckers-{ may be youngsters from last year's hatch ]--the pine forest we
had as back yard is now houses so we are also now visited by two huge cats.
any ideas on what to feed these two [ too many kids around to use my trusty
22 with low volosity bullets]--is there a poison I can put in food that
might erase them?

I went up to the local hardware and bought me a 'have a heart?' trap. Metal
with a door that springs and traps them alive. My first season I caught
five...

Nothing too provocative. Simply the same old stuff, over and over and
over and over. I don't find it interesting enough to motivate checking in
like I did at first.

I'm not mad and storming off, I'm just bored and gradually drifting away.
