The end of an era occurred last week, largely unnoticed by most, I'd
wager. The last combat veteran of WWI passed away and was laid to
rest. With it being nearly 90 years since the end of that Great War,
I confess I'd never given much thought to the possibility that those
who fought there may still be with us.

Interesting story. I'd heard on NPR a few months ago (probably around
Veteran's Day, back in Novermber) that there were 6 remaining WWI
vets. My reaction was pretty much the same as yours.

I also remember hearing many years ago about the death of the last
American Civil War veteran and, somewhat later, the last widow of an
American Civil War veteran (and have no recollection as to when either
of those events occurred).

Wouldn't it be nice to remember hearing news of the death (at old age)
of the last combat veteran?

while......but wouldn't mind an opportunity to put that theory to the

I do remember that the death of the last Confederate widow caught my
attention (seems not that long ago), probably because I'd read Allen
Gurganus' book of almost the same title.

years of age, or something like that?

That's pretty much the gist of the book too, though I have no knowledge
whether the novel was at all based on any real person.
