Cleaning out the boat the other day, I came across a flyline, but do not
know the weight. Could be a 4 or 5 wt. Doubt is from the 8 wt. Is there a
diameter chart related to wt.?

I have at least one line that has the weight & taper printed in very
small letters on the coating. Can't remember who did that, but it's
worth a look.

Don't think so .... trying it on a rod is very accurate though ... if you
like it on a 5, it's a 5, .... if on a 6 it's a 6 etc etc

You'd have to weigh it: http://css.sbcma.com/timj/flyline_chart.htm

Cortland "Lazer Line", perhaps?

Geez, it's been so long since I bought a flyline, I can't remember if
I've ever bought the Courtland Lazer. I know a couple of the most
recent lines were Teeny "Triangle Taper", but I don't know. Now I'll
have to go look in the bag & see what's what.

Conversely, my absolutely very first intro to fly rods was an old FG
rod of undetermined weight. The shop owner gauged the flex, lined it
with a shop reel & went out back to cast it. Yup. 6wt.

The only really "pricey" rod I've been tempted to buy in the last few years
has hand printed on it " lines 3, 4, 5 "

That isn't the reason I like it, but it is related to that reason ... a
maker building fishing tools more than fishing hype .... all rods and lines
have some overlap in what 'size" they can be called, depending on caster and
usage. And nearly all rods used to be labeled with multiple "numbers"
...... but, imho, "how can we sell more rods" was answered at the RodCo
meeting table one morning with "convince em that a 5 and a 6 are hugely
different, and they need one of each"

Cortland "Lazer Line", perhaps?

Seems to me with all the quoting of line weights and the slinging thereof here
abouts in the last week - including tables, links, etc - one could simply
weigh the first 30 feet and look up the classification...

/daytripper (ever helpful ;-)

Yep. There sure is. Unfortunately, unless it is a silk line, it won't
help much.

TC,
R
....can 14538 lines of connorcrap on the subject be long in coming...
