Just wondering if any of you have tried using the Specrta.etc styles lines
as backing.I figure something quite heavy say a 60lb so it wil not have a
tendency to cut into your fingers.Polyester backing has about the same cost
at the Blue box store.Appreciate it. Thanks Marty

Cortland Micron can be had in 20# or 30# breaking strength, comes in different
colors (so you can have your last 50 yards be something that'll let you know
you might be in trouble ;-) is unlikely to damage snakes, strippers and
tiptops, seems to last forever, and can be blind spliced so neatly you'll
never even know when a splice zips through the guides ('cept for a color
change)...

I can't think of a good reason to not use Micron for backing.

A good tip on its own, and I'd offer that if you're regularly in danger
of a run in and out of the backing, having at least three
telltales/colors might be helpful - if you will, an "attention, HEY!,
whoa****!" sorta system.

I have almost 400 yards on my largest sal****er spools. I can't imagine
hand-coloring all that backing. And if those markers aren't truly permanently
colorfast, you could end up with a spool full of brown backing.

As for splicing (or coloring) multiple backing colors ( two) that seems like
overkill to me. I'm not cooking up a rating system ("Yeehaw, man! That bone
took out five colors!") all I really want to know is if it's time to pull up
the anchor (figurative or literal, depending) and give chase...

I've successfully used Powerpro as backing. 50# is thinner than 20# dacron
and not so thin that it will cut your hands or cause problems with slumping
on the spool.

I use PowerPro as well for fishing the surf. I generally don't need
all that backing except that once in a while an unexpectedly large
fish will take the fly. It does not damage the equipment but I do
wear finger protection.
