OT Home Depot
Since I retired, (sort of), a couple of weeks ago, I have been
catching up on some home projects, as well as fishing. I own an old colonial house with the old fashioned wooden windows, and several of them need putty and paint. I had to go to the city the other day, so I stopped at Home Depot on the way home. I picked up some putty, and looked, unsuccessfuly for a can of black enamel. I spotted a young girl who was in charge of the paint department, and explained what I was going to do, and asked if she had any black enamel. Long pause and blank stare. Finally she responded with, "You mean like........paint? "Yes, just like paint", I said. She then informed me that they have to mix all their paint, and wahat color would I like? I replied that black would not need to be mixed. She replied that all their paint is mixed, and that they start with a base white. I said that if they start with white, what I would want, would be whatever they mix with the white to get black. She said that would depend on the color I want. At this point I was developing a strong urge to grab her scrawny neck and squeeze till her eyes bugged out, so I simply thanked her for her help, and left. It's little events like this thatmake me thankful I'm on the way out instead of the way in. OBROFF: The water at the "secret spot" is still very high, so I haven't fished it, the Willimantic is not fishing well due, ( I think), to recent flooding. I did have a good day on the Farmington last week, and I have been fishing a couple of spots I hadn't fished in thirty years, with reasonable success. |

I too fished the Farmington last week, George, and had a pretty good day. I went back the next day only to find fishermen wall to wall - seems the stocking truck had made a visit. Dave |

I was able to squeeze a few hour on the Quaboag last Sunday morning. L_cy St__e park was awsome - big ol' 'bows. Now, if I can just find a way in the new 10 days to ditch these relatives who invaded during prime-time for Spring fishing . . . -- TL, Tim --------------------------- http://css.sbcma.com/timj/ |

Spent about $700 in split rail fencing material. I asked for help in loading it and the guys in the fence area were rude and clueless as to what an endpost was versus a corner post. Then a manager came by on a fork lift and scolded the guys for opening a banded bunch of split rails. He said I should have gone into the store instead of the garden area. Right, I wanted to load 51 rails 2 or 3 times. |

When I took art classes, I was told there is no such color as "black". No color can be mixed from primary colors to make the color black. You also can't make white. So from a tube of black, white and the three primary colors, our first assignment was to make the color wheel. I just got done painting my Son's room who is now in college. We're turning it into a relaxing/quiet room. We also purchased our paint at the Home Depot. When we picked out our colors they do start with a base white and add the color pigment. -tom |

Home Depot is consistently in the ten worst lists for lousy customer service. http://www.crmlowdown.com/2006/11/the_10_best_and.html Our good local hardware store was wiped out by Home Depot. The old guys who could walk back and get you a 5/16" Whitworth left handed HHCS are gone. Now if you can get someone to talk to you they don't know NC from NF. |

I have found for just about any store, if you research first, then go in to purchase, you're far better off than speaking to a sales clerk. -tom |

Home Depot arrived here about ten or fifteen years ago and started popping up a new store every week or so.....or so it seemed. For the first couple of years the service was outstanding, and it has since gone into the toilet. No surprise. It was also no surprise that they went head to head against a regional chain, Menard's, and started opening new stores wherever the competition was. What IS surprising is that Menard's took up the gauntlet and started building new stores across the street wherever Home Depot was and they didn't already have one of their own. Don't know the numbers, but Menard's looks VERY healthy. Then came Lowe's.....just in the last couple of years. Same story. Of course, a lot of small neighborhood hardware stores have gone tits up. But I've seen that happen for many many years......and long before the big players entered the market. Meanwhile, a lot of small neighborhood hardware stores have NOT died. We've got one a mile and a half from here, Blair's. Home Depot is about a mile from them. Blair's has a loyal customer base comprising people who don't need someone to tell them the difference between lumber and lawn litter and who appreciate access to a staff who know the difference between a saw-set and a set of saws. I go to Menard's (and sometimes Home Depot or Lowe's) when I need a couple thousand dollars worth of treated lumber for a deck project or when I need items that I can find in stock and know I would have to special order at Blair's. Otherwise......well, the folks at Blair's know me on sight.....and by name. Wolfgang who hasn't seen a whitworth thread (let alone left handed) in decades......but still has the gauges. :) |

Will probably be in the 15% range, but I think you work for Stanford, so may be 25%. Will be in the same price range of HD, and is much better paint. And a whole bunch better service. |
