Rainy Lake Minn.

Going to spend 10 days on a house boat in early August--will be towing a
bass boat and a canoe for fishing. I normally fish in mountain creeks for
trout with a fly rod and a small pond for bass with fly rod and spinning
gear----what should I expect to encounter on this trip ? Anyone been there
?

Well, most of all, you should expect to have a great time! I did a Lake of
the Woods houseboat trip in early August with my family and had a blast.
That was eleven years ago and the kids still talk about the trip!

Rainy Lake has a tremendous walleye population, so make sure you take plenty
of 1/8 - 3/8 oz. leadhead jigs as well as white, chartreuse and smoke color
curly tail grub bodies. You might need to go with livebait (nightcrawlers
or leeches) to tip the jigheads with, but if they're active, you can catch
them on a jig/grub combo.

Smallmouth bass should be going good too. Take a selection of senko style
stick baits (http://gotobaits.com) and some 1/0 or 2/0 octopus hooks. Wacky
rig the sticks and toss them near rocky shorelines. Zoom SuperFlukes Texas
Rigged with a 5/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook will get you larger smallmouth.
Topwater flies and black rabbit hair leech flies should get smallies too.

Take along some 3 - 4" Rapalas. Silver/black, gold/black and firetiger
colors should get you bit by not only smallies, but pike and walleyes as
well, especially at night for walleyes.

Finally, make sure you have a selection of Secret Weapon spinnerbaits
(http://www.secretweaponlures.com). 3/16th and 5/16th oz. sizes will work
for both smallmouth and pike. Firetiger, chartreuse/white and Midnight
Snack would be great colors to take.

I agree with everything Steve said especially the Secret Weapon
Firetiger. That has been my search bait for the last 4 years up
there.. My employer has a lodge on Trout River way up Red Gut Bay.
(Shannon's Camp) Like most lakes I have been to in Canada the walleyes
seem to prefer green jigs. Check out the this link for the most up to
the minute info on Rainy. And, oh yeah, pack your rain gear cuz Rainy
can be like Seattle. Short passing rain followed by beautiful weather.
