This one depends on access to thicker sheets of closed-cell foam.
I bought some ultra-lightweight EVA (ethylvinylacetate) foam for making boat seat cushions in the late 1980s It was two pounds per cubic foot, which is about half the density of the junk they sell in fly shops. Once I saw how light it was I bought a bunch more in various colors, for fly tying. They didn't have tan at that time, so I ended up with white, gray, black, yellow and orange. 2lbs per cubic foot foam is so light you cannot sink it. You can hang a big, heavily weighted nymph off the back end of one of these and it stiiiiiilllllllll won't sink. 20 years later and the wholesalers still haven't figured this out. The foam they sell is so dense it barely floats. That's because dense foam costs more, so the salesmen make a bigger markup, so they sell it to dummies who don't know better. Punchline: I don't think you can buy this foam. The magic of the market place is stuck in a mire. http://montana-riverboats.com/Pages/...per/index.html -- /* Sandy Pittendrigh --O0 ** http://montana-riverboats.com */ |

So I forgot to explain.....the only sources for 2lbs per cubic foot foam I have ever found where wholesale only. So you have to buy a couple hundred bucks worth to get it. I look periodically, on Google, Thomas Register, etc. But I have never yet found a retail source for this stuff. Wake up wholesalers. Buy the right stuff. -- /* Sandy Pittendrigh --O0 ** http://montana-riverboats.com */ |

FWIW Racing balsa weighs 4 pounds per cubic foot. So this light weight
flimsy, easy-to-break balsa is still twice as heavy as your durable foam! I totally agree! Why oh why can't we buy light weight, easy-to-form, cheap foam for our flies? ARRRRGH!
