posted pics on abpf. fishing was excellent. only fished the madison
one day...last sunday...from 3 dollar up to the slide inn. oddly, i saw
only one person on my side of the river until i got to raynolds, then
only 3 others from there. lots of big fish on the edges in early
morning and late afternoon. caddis were the ticket. fished to one huge
brown for about an hour at indian joe's turn above miller's archipelago.
that fish still haunts me like middleton's blind trout in the bright
country...except i didn't catch him. he was well over 20 inches. he
nosed my fly three separate times, toying with me. each time, his head
came out of the water and that one big brown eye looked right through
me. i have a few fish i'll never forget...he is one of them.

the rest of the time, danl and i fished smaller creeks and the gallatin.
all except fan creek were very productive. we hit one spot that was so
good we spent 3 full days on it. big rainbows and cutts...beautiful,
healthy fish. danl left for wyoming last saturday to fish some streams
down there before heading back to californicania, and other than my day
on the madison, i spent the rest of the time touring with rachel. i
missed seeing the usual folks, but danl, rachel, and the fish are great
companions. the campfire lodge breakfasts are still the best anywhere,
though there is a new waitstaff. mark and his wife (she received her
nursing degree and licensure) have moved to billings.

your imagery about the big brown is very good.

we need details about the three day creek, which would be a good name
for it, if you fear disclosure of the truth.

did you go by the small (by montana stds) that i hiked up, barely
surviving, when i was there last?

danl and i had planned to fish cardiac creek, but we tried some new
areas and found three day creek. it was so good, and as pretty a stream
as any i've fished, that we stayed on it and never got to cardiac.

three day was full of big rainbows and cutts. we caught a lot of
them...all on dries (though danl might have dabbled with a dropper a few
times). i caught many on a big rogue salmonfly pattern even though that
hatch had ended weeks before. danl caught the biggest fish, several 17
and 18 inchers. i hooked a monster...easily 20 inches...that threw the
hook at the apex of a 3 foot leap from a deep, clear pool. beautiful,
powerful fish. as you would expect, danl is the best of fishing
companions and adept at teasing the trout. he did some pretty work with
dry flies on undercut banks and under the willows.

we only had one day when we saw another person on the stream ahead of
us. like nc, he put the fish down noticeably as we came to the place he
put in. but the guy only fished a short stretch and we moved above him
and didn't encounter another person the rest of the day. there were
deep pools between shallow runs, undercut banks, and many deep fast
water channels. three day presented every kind of spring creek stream
character you could want in a small western trout water. the water temps
were in the mid 50s in the morning, and the fish were fat and brightly
colored. in contrast, the fish i caught in the madison looked washed out.

if you return to the area, three day is a stream you would and could
enjoy. it doesn't require the treadmill tromp that cardiac creek
presented, plus it's wider and more open, easy to wade, and can be
fished effectively from the rocky banks in most places.

You're not so bad yourself. I had a great and glorious time. I'm always
proud to share a stream and a beer with you.

Well, there was that one other super creepy guy communing with entities
unknown and wielding a large,mean-looking tomahawk......

The one trip I took up Fan Creek, couple years ago, I thought I must have
gone the wrong direction, or something ... "the book" raves about it, but
in reality I found "ho hum" fishing AND atmosphere.

Glad you had a good trip, Jeff. Because of the heat/sun/ lack of bugs I
left a couple weeks earlier than "normal" I may go back to Yellowstone/
HFork in Sept but will probably make it no farther than Silver Creek/Big
Wood and vicinity

it was a good trip this year...different, but still fun and educational.

i think you probably have to hike in about 2 miles before fan is
worthwhile.

sorry we missed you... i thought you were going to be at slide inn, but
they said you and your wife weren't there when i checked. we did see
harry, but rachel and i went over to cody for the museum and we didn't
make it back for the last 2 days of our stay. we missed connecting with
warren too...though rachel had a brief interlude with him and his
daughter jodee one evening at the howlin mad moon. maybe next year...
