It can be pretty tough. I just got back from a conference in Boulder and I
took a couple of days to fish the Big T below the dam. The days I went the temps got into the 90s by mid day, putting the fish down. You can fish when it is that hot, but it stresses the fish and I just took a break from about noon until 5 or 6 when it started to cool off. There are pulloffs for miles below the dam in Estes along highway 34, just pick one and give it a shot. The guys at Kirk's Fly Shop in Estes are great and will give you good advice. I had my best luck on dries (PAdams, BWO, etc.) drifted PERFECTLY beneath the willows on banks. Remeber that these fish have had a rod over them from the day they were born and have seen EVERYTHING. Stealth is the key. If you want to go into the park and fish the creeks in the park, I recomend camping and hiking as far in from the roads, access points and campgrounds as possible. Good luck, it is beautiful up there. "jim" wrote in message ... Can anyone tell what the fishing is like around there in the rivers |

I was in Estes Park July 7 - 14 and July 18 - 22. The fishing was awesome. I particularly liked the North Fork of the Big Thompson and Glacier Creek. The North Fork is good if everything else is too crowded (try it on weekends). Glacier Creek had some pressure since it is easily accessed from the raod and near Sprague Lake. The Big Thompson along the road to the Fern Lake TH and along the trail below "The Pool" had some great runs and riffles. The North St. Vrain was still running too high when I was there.
I had many hits on top, but caught most fish on a nymohed below the dry. BH pheasant tails in size 18 worked the best. Check out Estes Angler for the latest advice and fly selections. |
