Will the hare lose the race?
 

As of recently I have been getting amped up for some steelhead fishing
in the upcoming months. Last season I started swinging flys on the SR
with very good success. There were many angry chromers that were
willing to jump on my fly’s. When I say fly’s it is bit of an
exaggeration as most if not all of my chromers taken on ther swing took
two patterns.

To try and occupy my time that is not spent fishing I have begun to try
and diversify my fly selection. I came across a pattern a few days ago
called the purple spawning spey. It is a fairly easy pattern to tie
that I think looks great. One issue I had with it was wrapping the
Guienna hackle near the collar. After struggling with the wrapping of
hackle I posted my problems on this site. I managed to get some very
helpful information regarding how to wrap hackle from an excellent fly
tyier. One note of advice that I found interesting was wrap the hackle
sparse. It is not always that when one recives advice that they are
fortunate enough to be give an explanation as to why things are done a
certain way. However I was fortunate enough to receive some real good
advice as to why to sparsely wrap hackle.

One of the reasons I was told to sparsely wraps hackle was that one
will be better able to present ones fly. The sparser the hackle the
less the currents will effect the fly the quicker the fly will get down
etc. That raised some questions regarding a some new pattern that I will
be tying next. I am looking to tie some bunny speys up. I had thought
that they would produce rather well and have been told they do. However
after all the concerns regarding wrapping hackle sparsely, finishing
flys with smaller heads to aid in there presentation and decent I
wondered how many negative effects does a bunny strip have compared to
a traditional hairwing?

Should the two wing styles not be compared? I have heard that there are
strict regulations regarding the use of weight or sinking lines on some
rivers specifically the ones the atlantics frequent. In the GL area
where sink tips are allowed should I not worry about the resistance of
the rabbit strip? Or as the saying goes is there a time and place for
everything?
