Trout Unlimited TV program

Yesterday I saw a TV program produced by TU and filmed near Asheville NC.
Showed the guys in a driftboat in the Tuckaseigee river catching what looked
like one stocker trout after another followed by some very large rainbows.
Then they talked about going elsewhere and how beautiful the native southern
appalachian brook trout are. Next thing we see are our heroes at a different
spot that they had to walk to (apparently not a long walk from wherever they
parked) and they are catching multiple 4-lb brook trout.

They made a few comments that, properly parsed and analyzed, might imply
that such brookies are not normal. But I think the comments were in the "I
did not have sex with that woman" category.

Extremely disappointing to see TU produce a program that, to me at least,
pushed the edge of the envelope on truth. They could have done a very
interesting and truthful program on native trout, but they did something far
different. It looks more like a commercial for a guide service whose name
was generously shown many times. Anybody else see it?

That's weird.

Only thing I can think of is a phoney baloney "Jurassic Park"
type pet fish farm. They sure as hell weren't wild fish.

I've caught brook trout that size in western NC. But they were brood stock
from a hatchery. TU was either catching fish like that, or the guide service
took them to a very special place reserved for high-paying dummies. Judging
by a little wooden bridge visible upstream, I think the guide service was
doing a pretty good job of self-promotion. And TU was doing a pretty good
job of being an accomplice.

Saw the show and have to agree with all that's been stated. Was also
really disappointed about the lack of "instructional" info presented.
I caught the advert for this show a couple of weeks ago in TU's mag.
and was really looking forward to the broadcast. Alas......
How about some of the NC-claver's posting some feedback? Bill in Va.

Timing is everything. None of the brookies I caught while attending
three separate NC claves in as many years was four pounds in
weight......at the time. Doubtless, all of them are by now.

I would love to, John, as much for the company as for the fishing.
Unfortunately, my arrangement with my putative employers is such that
I am forced to choose between eating and camaraderizing, at least for
the nonce. Maybe next spring.

Wolfgang
hm........maybe i should try working for a
living?..........mmmm......nah.

didn't see the show. but... 4 lb brookies in nc are from the trout zoos
only. tv trout shows are commercial bull****. teevee show producers
don't like the trouble, expense, and uncertainty associated with the
real story on nc brook trout fishing - thank god, goddess, and mother
nature. a 12 inch native brook trout in nc is unusually large and a
rarity. i've caught only one in my adventures chasing native brookies.
come fish with us sometime if you wanna know the true story...

As much as you post during working hours, it's obvious you don't work for a
living.

Well, gotta go. I'm on the clock, you know.

And yet the latest issue Trout (TU's magazine) has a very nice story on
Appalachian brook trout, including a shot of a stream that looks for all the
world as if its flowing down a grand staircase built of car sized boulders. And
no pictures of mesomorphic brookies.

Also the TU TV show last year did an episode on the Mecan R. in Wisconsin where
they were virtually rained out and spent most of the show talking water quality
and tying flies. Which, come to think of it, may explain why they might have
felt a need to spice up the production values this year.
