Sage 389-4 Light Line questions
 

Some questions,

Anyone know if Sage has released the old Sage 389-4 LL rod under the name of
Classic?
I've seen at least two references to this on Ebay where they are on sale,
but couldn't find anything about it on the Sage web site.

Ebay quote: "Every year Sage picks one of it's "stand out" models from years
gone by, and produces a special, limited edition run, of collector grade
rods, to commemorate a real all-star in their line-up.
There were only 500 of these limited-edition, serial numbered rods produced"

Ebay quote II: "Sage reintroduced this "Classic" series rod to commemorate
the beloved LL series that disappeared almost 8 years ago!"

Having a 490-4 LL and just loving it, I'm very interested in getting one of
those 389-4 LL.
IMHO it is one of the best graphite dry fly rods ever made for small stream
fishing.

Can it be that someone is trying to sell the VPS Light Series under the
pretention that it is the 389-4 LL rod?
Why couldn't I find anything on this at the Sage web site?

Why the hell would you want to buy a Sage for small stream fishing when you
own that little Tom Moran? (I think that is what it was, my memory is
clouded by whiskey fumes....)

Well, the Tom Moran is a delicious little rod which has just about all the
casting qualities one can wish for.
However, since it was quite expensive and also quite rare I'm trying not to
use it too often. Some might reason that it was built to be used and that it
should be used, but if used sparingly it will last longer.
A graphite rod on the other hand is more of a use it every day rod.
You never got to try it, did you?
Perhaps if you hadn't fished with the Garrisson replica all evening you
might have had some time to try the Moran rod. Or was it so that I was
insensitive enough not to offer it?
Anyway, you should consider this Sage as a replacement for you busted Thomas
& Thomas.

Do I detect a note of frustration here? Perhaps I "borrowed" the Garrison
for too long...........:-)

No, you did offer, I just got distracted by the Garrison copy. Even for a
putz like me that was a lovely rod to cast, at distances further than 30' or
so anyway. And as for replacing the T&T with a Sage? I'm not even going
there. Besides, I will have a new 8'6" 6wt from Cal Anderberg by spring and
this should keep my happy for a while.

If "some" want to fish a Tom Moran (not familiar with the rod-crafter,
myself), then "some" ought to purchase their own Tom Moran and fish it to
their heart's desire. Your desire to fish *your* Tom Moran when and if you
choose is matter that should concern no one else--unless, of course they own
a share of your Tom Moran.

I'm glad you gave it a chance. It does tend to take a while to get used to,
but once there and one's hooked.

Ah, but this is not like the other Sage rods that you build your opinion on.
Not the very stiff, totally insensitive, good for nothing (at least not
fishing) casting machines ;-)

There's nothing like a hexagonal piece of bamboo with a reel attached to it
when it comes to keeping a fly fisherman happy for a while. Is this another
of Jennifer Ohlsson's rod series?, or just the individually fitted cane rod
that only an assistant professor; or whatever it was, can afford? ;-)

Apparently, you are familiar with the pricelessness of the EagleClaw, but
most if not all Amerikan flyfisherpersons know that Walmart carries that
brand. Thus, the reason I will never fish then again. I figure they will
be collectors items in a coupla million years, and when they are, I'll be
rollin' in the dough!

This will be a personalized one. The Jennifer Olsson series has a lovely 8'
5/6wt rod loosely based on the Ritz/Young type tapers and I very nearly
bought one. But I decided I wanted something with a bit more power to handle
the wind up in the sand ridge country, so Carl offered to build the 8'6" 6wt
for me. It wont actually cost very much more than the insurance from the
broken T&T as he charges quite a bit less than Jennifer's rods cost, even
though he builds her rods as well. Of course, the detailing will not be so
flash on the new rod as on the commercial models but he assures me it will
fish as well. We will see next spring!
