Shad Spawn?

I was out on the river yesterday morning and as I rounded one point I
thought at first I was coming into an area of a feeding frenzy. After
watching a while I realized it was just tiny fish hitting the surface. It
looked a lot like the shad spawn I have seen in the spring time before.
Nothing was chasing these little guys. They were just hitting the surface
and diving again.

Anybody know if shad spawn again in the fall?

Joe the Elder suggests --John McPhee in "The Founding Fish " chapter five
tells all about shad spawning--a good read to add to your winter list.
