Phillipson Eponite P76 HDH 3 1/2 OZ.
What, is anything does anyone know about this flyl rod--year of make, line
weight, fiberglass? etc., etc., etc... It was found in the corner of a room of a building that the university has acquired--soon to be demolished. It is in superb shape. All of the wraps and guides are in clean and fine condition. The cork is soiled, but the down loking bitt is in excellent condition. It was brought to me, I suppose, because I am the only fly fisher in the physical plant--I didn't find it--. Op |

Op HDH is the line _size_ and 3 1/2 is rod weight - try it with a 5 or 6 wt. and go from there. 76 sounds like a 7'6" rod. Given that it is marked with size rather than weight, it's at least 40 years old and if it's fiberglass, that narrows it down from about the 50s to the mid 60s. "Eponite" sounds like one of the many fanciful names that they and many others gave to what is basically fiberglass. Someone now owns the "Phillipson" name and they might be able to tell you more than Google can. As to what it's made of, not to be a smart-ass...well, ok, so not a total smart-ass...but can't you tell? TC, R |

I was looking thru my numerous books on fly fishin' last night, as I know I have that chart in at least a couple of them, but I was unable to locate the info. I had a feelin' that the rod was either a 5 or 6 weight, from its feel. Op |

I believe its Phillipson Epoxite I'd contact the guy here or search for Rick's Rods in Denver who are supposedly experts on Phillipson's. http://troutunderground.com/2007/05/...rods-part-iii/ Thanks Wayne, I found his site and the one George posted before I posted to ROFF, but there was so little about Phillipson's fiberglass rods that I moved on. I kinda figured the the rod was made in the late 50s or early 60s, the site you posted and the site that George posted. I had read about and looked at the rods pictured in the site George posted, but none of the rods pictured is labeled exactly as the one I have. This rod is the same color http://p099.ezboard.com/ffiberglassflyroddersfrm10 as the second rod down, (apparently color matters when identifying Phillipson's rods) http://p099.ezboard.com/ffiberglassf...ID=348 .topic, has a "Genuine Epoxite Blank" emblem after the Phillipson emblem (not shown on any of the rods pictured?), but it is not marked "Master." The rod I have is marked P76 HDH 3 3/3 OZ and not 3 1/2 OZ as I stated in the "Subject." The wraps are black with 3 to 4 gold wraps above and below each snake guide, and the rod has the "hammer" grip described by the "Trout Undereground" site. I found a listing in the FISHING RODS: Antique & Collectible--Identification and Value Guide I have, but it is a P76F* fiberglass fly rod 7 1/2' (2/1) silver ferrules. *Everything is the same except the "F" aftere the P76? I did find a place where someone had attempted a wrap repair on the bottom portion of the snake guide just above the male ferrule on the tip section. Otherwise, except for a chip in the clear coat just below the "on" of Phillips[on] and a slight 3" scrape 6 inches up from the grip, the rod is in excellent shape to be so old and stored with out a tube. Anyway, I am more curious of the rods history as a Phillipson--Epoxite-- than its value, as it is in such good sape I believe I will line it and gofishin' this Sunday! Op |

Op Your post last night inspired me to fish my little glass St.Croix 7' 5wt. this afternoon. Worked just fine. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../IMG_0087a.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../IMG_0086a.jpg Had a bear cross the river about 150 yards upstream from me. Pretty cool. Wish I had had my camera out then. g.c. |
