Sage has come out with two 7'11" fly rods for bass fishing.

They didn't design them for conventional fly lines and they
didn't assign them conventional AFTMA weights instead giving
the weight in grains of the fly line they're meant to toss.

The "Smallmouth" is listed at 290 grains which is the upper
end of a 10 wt fly line and the "Largemouth" at 330 grains
which is an ideal 11 wt line. For comparison the "standard"
bass fly rod is the 8 wt, most consider 11 wts sal****er rods.

I don't imagine you'll see any pros using a fly rod in the
TV tournaments but if they wanted to Sage makes a rod for them.

I don't know. Might be an interesting way to present tiny weightless
plastics in clear water. If I was going to try I think I would go with a 5
weight though with a slightly heavier leader. I've got a 6/7 and a 7/8 I
use for big popping bugs and big weighted streamers already with 10 & 12
pound leaders. .

I imagine you could toss some pretty substantial lures with
an 11 wt fly rod. I use a 9 wt to heave hunks of wet rabbit
fur to musky and those things weigh more than a lot of crank
baits. For bass I use Sage RPLs in 5 & 6 wt and a T&T 7 wt,
that the "experts" came up with an 11 wt for bass boggles the
mind.
