Western Clave 2008?
Planning on heading out next year (every two years or bust...). May
actually be a bit later for me though. As promised (Mr. Miller) I am combining it with a family sightseeing tour (one if which Mr. Hightower wouldn't approve..). I tried to find availability for the family in July, but bookings are already spotty in the Park around traditional clave dates, so may actually be mid to late August. I assume the Western Clave (if a true one is to be had next year) would be early/mid July, or ? The Finn |

"jeff" wrote some were suggesting earlier dates - at the end of june. Mike, IF one has the option of choosing a time .... August ain't it, imho Even in a mythical "normal" year crowds are big, hatches small in the Greater Yellowstone Area in August. And 5 of the last 6 years have been far drier/ hotter than "normal." Last year many streams were closed to fishing by August. Even family touristy efforts are poorer in the crowds and heat of the eighth month ... most animals, for instance, having moved to high country areas far from roads. One can never predict, but I'd aim for June 1 to mid July, OR mid-Sept to "too damn cold" .... both for fishing and viewing. Before mid June, the options for fishing can be limited, but are likely to be very enjoyable options. |

The Yellowstone thing in August didn't seem too popular, but looking to stay an the park and the lodges are booking up fast. maybe many cancelled from this year and heading out next. Either way I would love to meet up on some piece of paradise with ya. Do you have any other plans to fish this year? I'm actually heading down to Florida next week, for 10 days, mostly family tourist stuff, but there's usually a side trip or two out with my brother. He use to test drive boats for Mercury down at Boca Grande, not he just drives boats to a fishing spot or two. Probably do the back bays for Snook and Reds, and if the weather cooperates, look for some Cobia. Penn's Creek is pretty low too. I hear the fishing is good, like fishing in an aquarium cause they're all bunched up. |

Around this part of the state (west) the salmon flies are generally out most of June- Fathers day on Rock Creek is pretty good. IIRC we saw lots of Salmon Flies on the Madison around the camp ground just after the 4th of July. The bad side of all this is spring runoff can make for tough fishing conditions. The last couple of years we've been into hoot-owl fishing by early August (rivers closed from 12:00 noon to 10:00 pm or something like that) I didn't get out much last year- started shooting skeet and was off to one tournament or another most of the year. The Finn Lost me on that one Mike. Since the boys are a bit young for back country adventures (6, 9), we'll be contributing to the Yellowstone automobile tourism and traffic. Looking for stuff outside the park too, like a trip over to Cody, or maybe a stay up to Cooke City, but I'm sure we'll participate in a wildlife viewing cluster or two. The last couple of years we've been into hoot-owl fishing by early August (rivers closed from 12:00 noon to 10:00 pm or something like that) Not totally adverse to an early morning/late day fishing, especially since that may be the only regular fishing I get in anyway, but would rather have options to fish along the way. So much to see, it being the first time up for the rest of the clan, we'll be all over the place. I didn't get out much last year- started shooting skeet and was off to one tournament or another most of the year. John Will take them to that spot on Slough that Jeff and I happened upon last year. Fishing was easy, and the scenery was to die for. Probably will take them to the Gibbon also. Any other suggestions for fishing with the boys? |

Any other suggestions for fishing with the boys? We were out there this last year and Sheepeater creek was pretty good for Brook Trout (nothing more than a foot long or so though). If you hike down past the first set of waterfalls it was very quiet and had both nice riffles and a meadow section. It's not more than a 1/2 mile hike so easy for the kids. |
