Fast vs Slow Rods
I understand that many folks really like the slow rods, hence the
comments about glass and boo. I, on the other hand, like a really fast rod (for 4wt or heavier). I use an ADG Titan 8' 4wt. Its my favorite rod and Roger Olsen declared it "dangerous." This after watching him blast multiple casts across to the far bank at the Cabin Run at Penns (and yes, it is an 8 foot 4wt)! Question, what other brand/model fly rods are on the market that you would consider really fast? Someone handed me their "fast" T&T that felt slow as molasses. Looking at the market for Xmas and want to narrow down the field (though I may just go and get ADG). Frank Reid |

I have only cast the #5 and #7 weights, and these are probably the fastest production rods I have handled. They are not only fast action, but also extremely fast recovery rods, and when matched with the right line are really "cannons". I donīt think they are really ideal fishing rods, but they are great for casting. TL MC |

Fast vs Slow Rods
Had never heard of an ADG before, so I went and had a look. I have no
idea what the rods are like, ( although I am sure you like them, or you would not say so), but they sure are good with bull****! :) http://www.adgfish.com/ TL MC |

Absolutely love it. I bought it at the Ft Washington PA fly show. I was testing a bunch of rods (Sage, T&T, Powell...) and after I cast the ADG, I went directly back to the booth and bought it. Haven't looked back. Frank Reid |

Roger Ohlund. I remember watching that. Fish were not being cooperative that afternoon, so we all lolled on the river bank, occasionally taking fruitless turns at displaying all manner of flies to uncooperative trout. Until Roger stood up and began casting. It was like watching a freak show. Of course, a freak show performed by a six foot three chiseled Odin. Roger threw perfectly formed loops with- easily- one hundred feet of line out. I felt ashamed of my own casting skills after watching that display. His rod, Frank's rod, didn't seem to matter. I think that was the day that he shamed us all into eating salad- SALAD- with our steak at clave central. Salad at a clave. Who knew? Bill |

I'm not sure if they offer that rod anymore? JT |

Haven't looked back. Frank Reid Not sold here as far as I can discover. There are so many makes now it is quite impossible to keep up with them all, even the relatively well known ones. Most pupils nowadays have cheap to medium priced models of varying rods, only rarely that somebody turns up for beginner lessons with a top-of-the-line rod. Still interesting to cast them all. Preferences also depend to a very great extent on what one is used to, and can get away with. Last week I gave a guy some lessons, and he turned up with a very soft rod. He wanted to double haul for distance while sea trout fishing in the sea. Such a rod is quite useless for that. He used a couple of my rods for the lessons, and was immediately enthusiastic. For some things you really need a fast rod. One thing that would interest me, and given that I know nothing about the specific characteristics of your rod, is do you have any problems with just "pricking" fish, or fish coming off once hooked? This seems to be a recurring problem for a lot of people who use fast rods. one can of course slow the rod down by overlining it, but this is hardly the best solution. How have you altered your tactics to suit the fast rod you now use? ( Assuming you used a slower one before). TL MC |

Looking at the market for Xmas and want to narrow down the field (though I may just go and get ADG). I like a slow action, it suits my casting style, but there are times when only a fast action rod will do. The fastest rods I own are a Sage RPL 9' 5wt and a custom Muskie rod that's a 9' 9wt. The Sage is my go to rod in the wind, a slow action rod is next to useless for casting hoppers into a wind, and the muskie rod I use to toss heavy hunks of wet bunny fur which is likewise uncastable with a slow rod. As for what's on the market today in the "fast" category, the fastest I've ever cast was the Sage TCR 9wt. I considered it when I was in the market for a Muskie rod but I got the custom rod for about half the price of the Sage. -- Ken Fortenberry |

I've cast a 5wt and it was a "fast" rod. Not sure what happened to the line, but it's on sale at Sierra Trading Post now. http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/9...4-Piece-9.html Temple Fork Outfitters have come out with a new, "fast" rod, called Axiom. Haven't tried one, but heard good reviews so far. I owned a Scott S3 5wt, which I thought was a bit too fast for a 5wt.....and I like fast rods. Winston has come out with a rod to compete in the "fast" fly rod market. Boron MX is what I think it's called. I know there are more "fast" rods out there, but these are the ones that come to mind right now. brians |
