Ankle support
 

It's about time for a new pair of wading boots.

Having taken a bad fall rock climbing in my misspent youth, I have special
needs in ankle support. I always wear ankle braces, beneath my waders, but
nonetheless uneveness of terrain and resulting flexing of my bad ankle often
takes most of the fun out of fishing. This is the major reason I fish
mainly meadow waters and avoid places like the Madison below Quake, where
even the trails TO the water can cripple me, let alone any actual wading.

Any suggestions for boots that provide exceptional ankle support while not
weighing a ton ? ... I'll want studs, for the same reasons of wading
weakness

No recommendations for boots, but I recall using ankle support inserts for
ice skating when I was a kid. Presumably some such thing is still available
somewhere. If you can find them, simply take a pair with you when you try
on wading boots and select whatever size will accommodate the inserts.

I do use ankle braces made of neoprene/velcro and wrapped tightly, much like
the old Ace bandages. I got them in the local drug store, and they are a
big help.

Seeking out a more 'high tech" version makes sense and ice skating seems a
good place to start ...

Just for giggles, I decided to google "ankle supports." EEK! There's a
billion or more out there! Haven't seen anything like what we had as kids
yet, but I did kind of like this one:

unbelievable !! there are whole sites where all they sell is ankle braces

For truly superior ankle support, you'll probably have to resign
yourself to some added weight. Simms Freestones have very good
support, but are a bit heavy and stiff.

I've not worn these, but have looked at them in the shop. They seem to
have good stiffness in the ankle area.

.....and yes, they ARE expensive.

A friend has these, and they too seem stiffer in the ankle area, than
many other boots.

I own Simms Guides, LL Beans(2 models), Korkers and Hodgemans. The
cheap, plastic Hodgeman's have the best ankle support, but fit the worst.

Just a thought.... If you need extra stiffness(sounds like you
definitely do)in a wading boot, you might try talking to a cobbler. They
might be able to fit studded felt soles, to hiking boots. Some of the
backpacking/trekking boots come with a lot of ankle support. I've had
cobblers replace soles on my wading boots. The cost is reasonable, and
they do a nicer job than I do.

Many years of soccer have left me in the same condition. I have a
drugstore brace I use religiously but I still have to be careful how I
place my foot. I can't claim extensive experience with many brands of
wading shoes. What I have used a

Cheapy FlyTechs
Cabela's Guide weights
Korker convertibles (the old style)
Simm's Freestones

of those IMO the Korker's were the best for ankle support. If only the
blasted sole inserts would have stayed in! They never seemed to pop out
in the stream just when hiking. I am just wearing out my second pair of
Simm's. They are ok but nowhere near as good as the Korker's. For the
next pair I thinking of trying the new style of Korker's, the ones that
look like snowboarding boots.
