Favorite FF books?
Last night I was reading a new book and enjoying it very much. It
occurred to me that one thing I thoroughly enjoy about Winter is that I slow down a bit and can relax and read more (I also enjoy tying next year's flies and dreaming about the Spring fishing). Anyway, I thought I'd ask on ROFF about your favorite FF books. Books that you just enjoy reading. Last night's book was "Wet Flies" by Dave Hughes that I just picked up last week. I really enjoyed the reading (not just the "technical" stuff, but the stories about the authors fly fishing experiences). What are some of the FF books that you most enjoyed reading? - Dave K. |

I was thinking of trying my luck a bit, as long as there was open water. Maybe on the Vermillion river near Pontiac, or even the Mackinaw river (West of Bloomington). |

I will drill a hole in the ice and dangle a Swedish pimple in front of some bluegills every once in awhile but that's about it. One of the reasons I decided to take up muskie on the fly was to give myself a winter fly fishing option. Lake Kinkaid in far southern Illinois is close enough for a weekend trip and the muskie fishing there is supposed to be among the best in the state between late November and early June when the water is cold enough. This year I'll be fishing the winter trout season in southeastern Minnesota. More like wandering around in the snow with a fly rod in hand but what the hell. -- Ken Fortenberry |

Some of my favorite book are probably on everybody's list: Fishless Days, Angling Nights The Longest Silence Trout Bum There is one in particular that I love: The Moon Pulled Up an Acre of Bass It is about a guy who rented a place on Montauk and fished the entire fall run of striped bass. I live in steelhead country, and often dream about chasing the spring and fall runs without any other commitments in my way. I also have an older book by Peter Barrett called Searching for Trout. he tells of his adventures with Ted Trueblood, one of my favorite old school authors, back in the day before fly fishing was a yuppie activity. In some ways modern fly fishing turns me off, and i like to read the older stories that were just that - good stories. That pretty well echoes my feelings. While I _use_ various "technical manual" type books for reference, I don't particularly like _reading_ them for the sheer joy of reading. I prefer the "fishin' (or huntin') story" books for reading. Of the "modern" authors, I'd say John Gierach, Gene Hill (now gone), and Pat McManus (not really fishing...as such...) are the ones I'd put toward the top of a list, if I were inclined to make such a list of "favorites"...but I'm not... It was his articles in Field & Stream that formed my image of what a fly fisherman is. I would love to hear his take on things today. What a shame. Yes, it was. TC, R Pete |
