Firehole
The Firehole has only a very short season each year, from the opener until
about the first of July ( well a second short one late fall, too). Most years it then gets too hot for decent dry fly action. And the Firehole mostly only has smaller fish ( best ever for me was just shy of 18") ... again probably because of the hot water that flows in from the geysers. And the Firehole can be pretty damn crowded, being right on the road in many places and often the best dry fly fishing for hundreds of miles in the month of June. And, you can't be shy and fish there, you get your photo taken several times a day, unless you walk well away from the roads (photo 40) . Thus, this lovely stream has it's drawbacks. But, it's still very close to a perfect place to fly fish .... imho .... for it's short season and after the opening day rush. In mid-June you might be able to fish to rising fish from mid-morning to dusk as the hatches progress through the day. http://www.kimshew.com/visuals/Firehole/ he, he, near the end ( 39?) is a shot of a 'clave'? those guys, all in a pile, were the only anglers on a mile of stream ... I know because I had worked it all moving up to where I took the photo ..... I'll just never understand 'fishing gangs' ... or, for that matter, how anyone could enjoy having a guide peering over his shoulder ... makes me claustrophobic thinking about it G Larry L ( who hopes the pics help with cabin fever .... and who is leaving now to go fish for a couple hours ) |
