I was in a small village...very small. Sand roads and dirt floors. I had been there some weeks up the Essequibo River in Guyana and I was leaving the next day. A family had adopted me...to both our benefits, I had a place to stay and they had someone who always came home with a chicken or fruit. I had been out late, the local boys and I...carousing quite a bit and I was staggering to my room. Imagine my surprise when I entered and found signs wishing me a 'Happy Journey' and food and other much festive occasion. Three, count 'em three young maidens came to me and said, "John, what would you like?" Ever the idiot I pretended ignorance....but they were not to be deterred. So we proceeded downstairs and out back under the palms and coconut trees to the hammock. To the first and most matronly...the softest, I said, "Rock me in the hammock." To the second and perhaps youngest, albeit of an indeterminate age, I said, "Feed me fruit." ....and to the third, I said, "Ping me, baby!" ....and by the time I explained that...further festivities, although within my inclination, were not in my wherewithal.... ....so help me god............. john |
