Whats the best thing to use for cleaning the outboard shaft and lower
unit? mine has a film, scum like residue.

Er, just what does the manufacturer recommend? Personally, I use a
cleaner like 409 or Simple Green, along with an assortment of soft
brushes. I would stay FAR away from any solvent or petroleum-based
cleaners, as they may attack and weaken seals and gaskets.

A lot of fellows at tournaments carry with them a spray bottle using
vinegar and water. They spray down the entire outer hull, lower unit,
and wipe down. Just do a section at a time.
