Fish with nymphs mostly, at that time of year.
You might try a big one and a little beadhead at the same time.

The water is fast and rocks are slick. If you go down, don't
flail around and fight the current. Just go with the flow.
Keep your feet up and pointed downstream, and let the current
take you to a spot where you can stand up again.

Hang on to your rod. You can maneuver too, with feet downstream,
close your legs, open them up, close them again, with your back
toward the bank. That will zoom you right back to the edge.

You can swim (and enjoy the ride) that way for a mile.
But if you panic and fight the current, you could run out of energy
lickedy split. I almost went down there in early March.
Ice was 3' thick at the edge. That would have been dicey.

i've only been there in early july, so no idea about hatches or fish in
early june. the slide has been upgraded a lot since i first went there a
few years ago. you now have to pay for the meal plan with a room. i
liked the location and the folks i met there...even a teevee/movie star
(a guy who was in dallas and some b movies). fishing was always superb.
pricing has increased too much for my taste just now though.

still, i think the slide sits on some of the best fishing in the upper
madison. kelly galloup and his crowd are terrific folks. you'll need
to get used to kelly's understated, sardonic sense of humor. don't
hesitate to ask him and the guys in the shop where to fish and what to
use...they know. also, the seemingly shallow braids of the river behind
the slide hold some big fish...even spots you'd think too shallow. the
main river is fast coming out of the earthen dam just upstream...focus
on the edges and rocks, look for seams. the big fish will be just off
the edge looking for stuff. i suspect nymphs/stonefly, and maybe some
big streamers will work best, but my friend warren has done well with
dries in june. the shop reports about what is working are usually very
accurate. i like starting at raynolds bridge and working the shore back
to the shop. there is a great location in a big bend just up from the
bridge and in the area of some islands...don't hurry by that. it's an
easy walk down from the slide on well-worn paths by the stream.

west yellowstone is a tourist ****storm with some excellent flyshops.
blue ribbon is my favorite solely because its owner and staff have been
uniquely kind and patient with this stupid southerner. go there only as
necessary for food, supplies, liquor, etc.

give the lower gibbon and the firehole a try in the park...

if you have any other questions, let me know. i can give an outsider,
once-a-year visitor's impressions.

What Jeff said. Don't neglect the water between Quake Lake and Hegben
Resevoir. Some great fishing there. Also, if you're fishing, as Jeff
mentioned, up from the bridge, the better fishing IMHO is on the lodge
side of the river. Some of those back waters in there hold some huge
fish.
If you have a float tube or pontoon boat, try a trip out on Quake lake
at night. Fish big streamers and frog/mouse patterns around the stump
field. There are some certifiable 20lb fish in there. That's the
only place I've ever used an 8wt for trout. And if you happen to have
a beaver slap the water three feet from your pontoon on a moonless
night, carry a clean up kit to get the mess out of your waders.

Thanks Guys
I will take your comments re safety and various holes and spots and other
comments into account.
I greatly appreciate your advice
I can't wait to go
I did not want to be there Memorial Day weekend

Re pricing
It does seem pricey but I am taking my wife and she enjoys it more w comfort
- altho she will camp
What we do is 2-3 days of camping followed by 2-3 days of hotel and clean
up.

A trip to Rock Creek to warm up my casting arm comes first - either this
weekend or the one after - but certainly before Memorial Day

While the Slide is comfortable and much more civilized than spit-bath
camping, I trust your wife will not expect Holiday Inn rooms or
bathrooms. I've never stayed in the larger units with the covered
porches over on the left side as you enter, always stayed in rooms in
the building on the right as you enter. They are rustic but very
comfortable. However, my wife had a sudden urge to see Cody, Wyoming
and the AmericasINN suite with a jacuzi after one night at the Slide
because a mouse found its way into the room. It was also uncommonly hot
last year in July, and the rooms can get a bit stuffy.

The Howling Mad Moon down the road has better rooms but doesn't have the
river access or Galloup's shop that makes the Slide so unique.

Look forward to your report though.

enjoy the music
However we have a cabin rented and I am told that the whole place was
recently renovated

I know nothing of the Slide Inn, per se as a place to stay, but I'm leaving
here soon for my 6th consecutive June "in the area."

Sandy has given good advice for the lower Madison at that time of year....
except I wouldn't even try to wade if it's like last year ... too damn scary
...... and the fish are right next to shore anyway ( if allowed to be .. and
in early June that section of the river gets very little pressure ). The
world famous dual nymph rig can produce some nice fish in the Reynolds to
West Fork section ( I've never fished right around the Inn ) in early
season, if you're into that kinda thing. Personally, I'd stay closer to
the Park and fish in it for early June.

As you drive the 40 miles from Slide Inn to the Park pull off a few places
along the north shore of Hebgen ( if it's a calm day ) and take walks, rod
in hand. The fish cruise the shore eating midges unless the wind is
blowing much ... this can be excellent fishing ( anywhere on the lake but
that
north shore is right on the highway ) ... this is sight fishing, toss a big
( #16 or 14 ) midge emerger or pupa to fish you see coming ( don't let them
see you first ) .

But let me quote Craig Mathews one of the accepted local experts, ".... if
I had to pick just one day to fish the Madison River I would go in June,
just below Madison Junction in the Park. It would be a nasty day with wet
snow"

The Firehole and the Madison IN THE PARK will be providing daily,
excellent, dry fly fishing in early June. Expect crowds, both on the
roads ( Buffalo Jams are a way of life ... just relax you're on vacation,
remember? ) and the streams. Although there will be lots of anglers
out, I very seldom feel that crowded as there are also a lot of fish to go
around, and I hike a bit ( mid distances seem best, most guys are afraid to
lose sight of the car, the other type walk a olong ways .. in between the
two
groups is often the least pressured ). Firehole fish run smallish but
you can catch a trillion ... those in the Madison a little bigger, but
anything over 16 or 17 inches will be rare. Fish a #16 PMD Sparkle Dun,
and you'll USUALLY do well to risers. But, there will also be baetis,
midges, and Long Horned Sedge being taken ... for sure ... at some part of
each day, with other caddis important if it's warm .... wanna fish wet? ...
well the Firehole is Soft Hackle heaven .. and the Madison in the Park is a
great place for a little PT nymph under a dry ( although, obviously, many
things will work and each day is different )

I'll get to Baker's Hole just before Memorial Day weekend and stay until
late in June before I move closer to the HFork or take a run up to the
Missouri ...
