BIG FISH 2006 May 18th, 2008 03:30 PM

soft jerkbaits

I got a chance to go out fishing yesterday, and man did it feel good. I
started out in a small bay hoping to find a few on beds, no such luck.
Went out on a flat and found some bass cruising so I got out a 5 inch
Albino shad Assassin soft jerkbait and had a real good time. I added a
small red trebel hook to the belly of my 3/0 wide gap and I think that
was the ticket.

It may have just been the right thing to help you hook up. I have had the
darndest time with soft jerkbaits. I rig them up, get hit,. and they just
slide right out on the hookset. When its the only way I can get bit I try
and wait for the fish to turn away before I set the hook.

I know it sounds counterproductive, but when you're not hooking up on a
soft jerkbait try just nose hooking it. I've been fishing soft
jerkbaits since -- well hell, I coined the term soft jerkbait in an
In-Fisherman article on 1987 -- but after getting my rump kicked by a
couple friends who were fishing it that way, I only started the nose
hooking thing a couple years ago but when the cover allows rigging that
way, I'll do it every time these days.

You know Rcih, thats so painfully obvious I haven't a clue why I didn't
think of it. That's basically the same reason I went to wacky rigging
senkos. To hook up better.

That's a GREAT idea! I'll try it. In the small 8 acre pond I fish, I'm
sure they are getting weary of my lures, I like to switch them up and this
sounds like a good one. Now all I need is a swimbait that's 4-5 inches long
and doesn't sink like a rock...

Bob,

What rod are you using to fish a soft jerkbait? Also what size and
type hook?

At some time or other almost every rod in my arsenal. Also, usually a wide
gap to be weedless. I have since found a Daiichi Copperhead works better,
but also is not quite as weedless. I use the biggest hook that does not
impede the action of the bait for pretty much all applications.
