Get almost any trout guide (local library) and learn how to tell apart: caddis species (downwings) mayfly species (upwings) stoneflies and the like terrestrials. 2. Start recording the size of naturals in millimetres (or hook sizes.) -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

Peter's advice is sound. One of the things about the sport of fly
fishing(that some of us find appealing) is that it involves an ongoing learning process. One not only has to learn about food items(bugs, and much more), but about fish feeding patterns. Sometimes, what seems to be frantic surface feeding is actually going on right UNDER the surface, requiring the fly to presented at that level. Hold off on the tackle sale, and give the sport some patience. Believe me, we've all been to the place you were in today. Tom |

with a great hatch going on. I've always heard it's kinda pointless to fish during a heavy hatch because there are so many natural insects, no matter what you offer, it will be inferior to the real thing. Also, the chances of a fish taking your fake out of thousands of the real thing is low. That's just what I've heard. I don't know. Should I be fishing during a hatch? (I'm new, too) small black flies. Might be midges. nb |

What do you mean don't fish the hatch notbob.........If you don't fish
the hatch sell your gear because you are missing catching alot of fish and a great experience.......Come to the Penns Clave next year notbob we will show you how to fish the hatch........If your fly doesn't look enough like the hatch you shouldn't be using that fly if you have clouds of caddis put one on not all of them stay in the air some fall into the water at least you have a chance of getting a fish instead of standing there with a dumb look on you face..........I will find out the name of a book I think it's Northeast flies not real sure I have one but it's on loan but I did see one on the desk of softhackles flyshop pennscreekangler.com i can get the name from him it shows both the natural and the artifishle (sp) helped me alot I don't have to say Tom what's that in the air anymore.........I have been told that if you have big splashy rises the fish are looking for emergers (flies as they come out of the water)..........thats my .02 will post name of book when I get it.......... |

No, I was just saying that is what I've heard and read in a couple FF books. I suppose I should have actually fished a hatch to see if it is true. No more hearsay. I'll fish the hatch next time I see one. I've seen two caddis hatches, so far. One pretty heavy, one not so. I've had no luck with dry flies, but have been successful a couple times with nymphs. I'm going to try a dry/nymph dropper this afternoon. We may have a hatch, it being a warm semi-overcast day. nb |

the flies you were seeing are black caddis. It took me years to figure them out but they are so abundant in most streams its worth the time. Here are afew secrets[dont tell anyone:rofl:] Yes its true some fish sre jumping taking flies out of the air but most of the fish you seejumping are actually charging emergers so a all black soft hackle swung is deadly. Also after the caddis lay ther eggs they drift serenly on the water so a hemingway caddis works great trim the hackle so it rides flush. one last thing all black flies are near impossible to see on the water know were your leader is if you see a rise close lift you got em . -- trico mike ------------------------------------------------------------------------ trico mike's Profile: http://www.njflyfishing.com/vBulleti...hp?userid=2440 View this thread: http://www.njflyfishing.com/vBulleti...ad.php?t=14940 ----== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com - Unlimited-Unrestricted-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeeds.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 120,000+ Newsgroups ----= East and West-Coast Server Farms - Total Privacy via Encryption =---- |

Try an unweighted RS-2 as a dropper below an adult caddis imitation. If the
trout are more keyed into the emergers, that RS-2, either stuck in the film or swilling around below your dry, could be your ticket. It has worked for me in the past. --Dave Eriksen "A Polinger" wrote in message ... Pete, Thanks for the info, now I dont feel as dumb for not getting any.
