Headed out to Prescott Arizona for ten days. First trip out that way and
plan to drive up to Lee's Ferry area one day. Are there wading parts of
water in that area where you do not need a guide?. Any info thanks. Joe the

The best fishing at Lee's is upstream, and if you can get ahold of a
canoe, you can get one of the rafting companies to run you up and you
can float back down, fishing as you go. I used to spend the night in
the canyon that way....truly magical.

But that's not what you asked..

As for wadable water; you can wade anywhere along the shore. However,
the water is bracing....around 38-40 degrees. You'll need thick
neoprenes, or else breathables with a couple of layers of poly
underneath. And wade carefully; if you fall, you die. Hypothermia.

The best fishing is either upstream as far as you can walk along the
trail (beyond Lonely Dell), or else downstream in the big pool below
the first entry rapid. That section is more easily accessible from
below the lower parking lot than from the Ferry itself.

Enjoy; there are a lot of very big fish up there. But they are also
very educated...you would do well to hire a guide.

Hook up with Lee's Ferrry Anglers. Terry Gund is the owner and has a
stable of great guides. Your really need a power boat to get upstream to
the dam. They will take you to wade the great rainbow riffles.

I went about 15 years ago and was lucky enough to get Terry who has
written many books on the river as well has been on ESPN. He also guided
in Alaska in his youth. His wife Wendy is not bad either.

They have nice cabins to stay in with a killer restaurant and Bar with
great steaks. Beautufull country.

The fishing was great and the fish I landed and I caught many all
rainbows averaged 16 inches with a couple of 22 inchers.

I have fished many streams out west, but no rainbows fighted like this.
Size 18 to 20 nymphs on 6x and 7X. He has a great ultra down stream mend
techic. You really have to let them run or you will lose them.

Worth the trip.

Apropos whatever. . .
Lee's Ferry was named after John D. Lee, the central character in one
of the truly saddest moments in the history of the Intermountain West,
and the only White man executed by the Federal Government for the
Mountain Meadow wagon train massacre.

With the complicity (both in the massacre and the execution) of the
LDS Church; he was probably a patsy taking responsibility for the
entire thing. There are recent discoveries with evidence that Brigham
Young was informed and in an advisory role, but the church has
steadfastly maintained that it had no involvement. Its still a very
sensitive topic in Utah. There is also no archeological evidence that
the Paiutes were involved at all, but the the entire massacre was done
by the Mormons, contrary to their testimony.
