Your best bet would be the Rakia or Waitaki Rivers, both around 60 kms from
Christchurch, in the South Island.

The best method by far is to hire a guide with a jet boat who will take you
up-river. The boat drive in inches of water is a real buzz. This way you get
to fish a lot of pools, plus see some great country - and you could come
across a hobbit or two in the headwaters, hopefully no orcs though.

Contact 'Complete Angler' in Christchurch

and look at

Hope this helps

Hi David,

it´s not really free, I paid a fortune for it! :) Not to mention the time
involved!

Tony's advice on hiring a guide with a jetboat is first rate, but I would
warn that catching salmon on a fly here is a pretty tough option in most
curcumstances and your timing is quite late in the season. At that time I
would be more inclinded to try and chase trout, we have some of the best
trout fishing in the world and our salmon fishing is second to most other
salmon fisheries in the world.
