O.K. folks, I just have to vent. Been listenin' to a lot of CNN and NPR,
and if I hear another journalist mis-use the word "whether", by saying
whether or not- I will scream!!! Aren't these folks supposed to know
better?!

A word of advice; unless you REALLY like to mix it up, it's best to
avoid matters concerning proper English usage. People WILL disagree,
and strenuously, whether they know whereof they speak or not.

Whether or not they do misuse it, you should consider yourself lucky. Its
the news that they report that makes *me* want to scream. I was watching
Fox "News" the other day and it was totally obscessed with two subjects.
Sadam's capture and Scott Peterson's legal travails. The first is obviously
news worthy but the second should be on page 12 of the newspaper.

It would seem from this dictionary meaning it can be used with "or no" or
"or not".
meaning "in any case"

"Main Entry: whether
Function: conjunction
Date: before 12th century
-- used as a function word usually with correlative or or with or whether to
indicate (1) until the early 19th century a direct question involving
alternatives; (2) an indirect question involving stated or implied
alternatives decide whether he should agree or raise objections wondered
whether to stay; (3) alternative conditions or possibilities see me no
more, whether he be dead or no -- Shakespeare seated him next to her
whether by accident or design
- whether or no or whether or not : in any case"

I hope it isn't lutefisk (Do they eat that in Sweden?). It'll never

make
it past Homeland Security.

On the other hand, if it IS lutefisk.....or grits, or beets, or
haggis, for example....then it really doesn't matter how long it takes
to arrive. :)

Wolfgang
um.....or plutonium, for that matter. :(

Talking about traditional national recipes, ever had fermented Baltic
herring?
I is a Swedish speciality with a long tradition.
There was this Brittish TV cook by the name Floyd who said that it was the
second worst thing he ever tasted in any of the available continents, the
worst was some kind of larvae. He came to the conclusion that the only way
to eat it was together with a lot of Vodka......which isn't all that far
from how we eat it ;-)
Don't worry about the package being stopped in customs, as long as the guy
checking the package is a law obiding citizen it should be OK.
Strange though that it should take so long.
(And yes we eat "lutfisk")

/Roger
