Does anyone know what kind of fish this is? I thought at first it was
a carp, but look at the scales and the mouth. I don't think it's a
carp.

yep. Mirror Carp. Similar to the Leather Carp.

Check out "The Fly Rodder's Guide to Carp with Barry Reynolds" Video.

I just got it from BassProShops last week. Very interesting, and
better done than most fishing vid's I've seen.

Now, go have fun catching those monster minnows! :-)

Thank you Charlie S. for identifying that fish. I have caught several
Carp and I have never seen a Mirror Carp in the Kankakee River. This
picture is of a Buffalo I believe. The guy at the bait shop called it
a Carp, but it is different in the eyes and no barbles (I think that
is what they are called) on the mouth. Can you confirm that it is a
Buffalo? And if it is, can you tell what kind? When I look for
reference pictures of fish I keep finding these drawings that tend to
make all of the fish look alike. And I will check out that video. I
like catching those monster minnows!

Doesn't look like a buffalo to me. More like a carp, but I can't see
the form of the dorsal (looks like two, separate fins, which would
mean it's neither buffalo NOR carp). :-)
