I went fishing, South and North Forks of the South Platte River in Colorado,
on Tuesday this week. I was not the only one up there. I really did not
expect to be after the nice weather we have been experiencing. I am looking
forward to 2 days on the Arkansas River later this month before the Caddis
maddness starts.

Any hatches, any takes, any fish?

I saw a few fish, but that is about it. The water was very low and clear, I
was being lazy and not very stealthy, plus the water was being worked over
pretty good by all the fisherman up there. I did not see any hatches or
rises but once again I was being lazy.

I get out locally once a week or so ... catch a few fish, sometimes

Thankfully we're getting some rain lately ( we're still in drought and
forced into severe water rationing ) and my local river has been running
muddy. So, I may go troll a LarryBugger ( a pattern designed to suggest
the important pre-emergent stage of the Wooley Bugger ;-) around a local
stocked lake tomorrow.

Love the Platte. I only live 2 miles away. Unfortunately, 3 miles
away it dumps into the Missouri.

How do the streams out there fish in the cold? Recommended flies?
Worth the bother of bringing gear if one is out there in the winter?

The tailwater sections of streams fish well all year round. It is worth
bringing your gear if you can find time to spend on the river. As for
recommended flies it depends on the stream you plan to fish.
Here is what Pat Dorsey recommends as effective patterns for the Platte this
time of year: Midges and midges and...

#22-24 Mercury Flashback RS II, #22 Mercury Flashback Black Beauty, #18-22
Mercury Blood Midge, #22-24 Medallion Midge, #18 Mercury Cased Caddis,
#20-26 Top Secret Midge, #16 Flash Tail Hot Egg, #16 Nuclear Egg, #20-22
Mercury Black Beauty, #18-22 Mercury Red Pheasant Tails, #18-20 Rainbow
Warrior, #18-22 Mercury Flashback Pheasant Tail, #22-24 Mercury Baetis,
#20-22 Sparkle Dun, #20-26 Parachute Adams, #20-22 Cannon's Midge Cluster,
#24 Stalcup's Trico, #22 Snowshoe Duns, and #20-22 Griffith Gnats.

Take care

just south of you, the shad and new memories are beckoning. greenville
nc is a few hours drive (5 maybe?)...and from here, we can chase the
poor man's tarpon in the neuse, tar, and roanoke rivers. the fish
haven't arrived in numbers yet, but the water is warming and we'll be
giving them a proper welcome soon. you have an open invitation...
