Cutting Rabbit Hides
Does anybody here cut their own Crosscut Strips and regular strips
from whole hide? If so what is the best way to do that? There are some colors that I haven't been able to find except on whole hides. Thanks in advance for the info. Warren. |

If you want to get fancy, try this http://www.tandyleather.com/prodinfo.asp?number=311000&variation=&aitem=17&mit em=39 I've seen 'em in action and they're great. Always been meaning to get one, but have yet to fork out the dough. You can also use a "roller cutter" that fabric folks use. You lay the hide, fur down, and use the roller cutter to cut out strips (use a ruler to run the cutter against). It looks like a pizza cutter. Quilters also have templates that will help get your strips straight an even. Frank Reid |

Simple, cheap and effective. Use single edged razor blades. Use a deck of
playing cards. Put razor blades in deck of cards with sharp edge showing along the long edge of the cards. Put the number of cards needed between blades to adjust width strip you want. Use number of blades needed for width of hide. Hold the whole mess together with large binder clips and use one of the plastic spring-loaded wood clamps for a handle. Using three binder clips holds the tool together nicely. Caution! this thing will slice and dice anything it touches, including you. no Warranty expressed or implied. Do not try this at home unless accompanied by a trained professional. -- Wayne To Fish is Human...To Release Divine! "Warren Witkowski" wrote in message ... Hold the skin taut, ( either two people, or nail one edge of the hide to a board etc), and cut from the skin side. You can make a "multi"-cutter quite easily. Glue strips of wood alternating with razor blades together, with a handle in the middle. If you use this method, it is better to draw the skin, ( skin side to blades) over the cutter. Practice a bit with old cotton rags or similar, before you do it on a hide. Lastly, you can buy a cheap document shredder, and modify it somewhat. ( That is what I now use). I merely removed the blades I did not require, and substituted washers. Comb or brush the hair before you start cutting. This reduces damage to the hair on the strip sides. TL MC |

many tools requires you to lay the skin down on a hard surface, fur side
down, and cut with downward pressure. I find that all of these cut off a large amount of hair, and ruin most of the skin. A method recommended some time ago on this board is to use a "stitch ripper". It is used to remove stitches from cloth and is available for a few bucks in sewing shops. It is like a very small two pronged fork. The upper prong is dull and keeps the tool aligned with and above the skin or cloth. The lower prong is a very sharp cutting edge. You have to devise a method to keep the skin taut, and have to go slowly to keep the cut regular, but it removes very little hair from the skin. I am intrigued with some of the other methods listed here, but some a pretty expensive for cutting a few skins. "Warren Witkowski" wrote in message ...
