Car top rod holder

While fishing over on the Bitterroot this spring there was a guy at the
flyshop with a car top fly rod holder. The beauty of this rod holder was
that
you could store the entire fly rod in it without breaking it down or taking
the fly reel
off. It looked like a metal/aluminum 10 ft. tube with a lockable door at the
fly reel.
It held two or three fly rods.

I've googled and found several option, but none like I have described.

Anyone know of the manufacturer or retailer?

TIA,
JT

Rod holder? Pffft!! I once knew a fellow from the Midwest who drove halfway
across the country with a rod tucked into the trim on the roof of the
vehicle, and it made it intact to Penn's(roffian name withheld). Live
dangerously, and save that money for really expensive, but necessary stuff,
like Simm's wadersg
Tom
......Lord knows, that was no help whatsoever.....

Saw a whole bunch of guys at the Second San Juan Clave carrying their
rods by putting the butt section under the windshield wiper with the
rod going up the windshield. As seen from behind, it looks like a car
with lots of antennas sticking up. You can safely carry four rods
this way, but ya sorta get into trouble when it rains. Thirty-five
mph would be tops.

Just wrap the rod in Simms waders and duct-tape it on the roof...Simms waders
are indestructible, if you haven't heard...

OTOH, you could take a thin-wall DWV (drain waste vent) or other thin-wall
plumbing pipe, glue an end cap on the forward end and bungee cord a cap on the
rearward end (get a rubber tarp strap - the black rubber style with the hooks in
the holes at each end) put a eye-bolt in the end-cap, run the strap through the
eye-bolt, and into a slot on the tube to secure the rear cap. Secure it to your
roof rack, and you've got a rod carrier...

Been using PVC pipe for rod cases for many years (still got a Brannif
sticker on one). Have, a time or three, bungeed them to roof racks.
While in Peace Corps, had a 2ft. piece hose clamped to the rear frame
of my bike, with a cut-out so the reel dropped down. Works well on my
current bike, when camped somewhere and I use the bike to get to
various points on the river -- like downstream from Fontenelle Rsvr.
on the Green.

I wonder how thief-proof these devices are, should you need to take a
break and be out of sight of the car?

"Hope all is as well as can be - thinking about you and the family."

Thank you, and to everyone who sent private correspondence. As you
said, all is as well as it can be. We're in the baby steps mode, one
small one at a time, and keeping moving forward.
And also, since I don't have access to the names, the son-in-law
mentioned that there were some significant contributions to the
memorial fund from "some of my fishing buddies." The money will go
towards both the Capitol Shakespeare in Bismarck, the Ehlers-Danlos
National Foundation, and, hopefully, a scholarship at the University
of Nebraska Omaha (the Other Nebraska college) for journalism majors.
Again, thank you.
